I am only just beginign to see how addictive this could be. I have 4 beautiful Buff Orps, three weeks old. They still have the heat lamp and it has been getting pretty chilly some nights, but last night we lost power. Is there an emergency method to keep them warm? It was about 40 and howling wind and rain and thunder, they got to move into the basement, they have been on the screened porch, They were fine, but I worried. I have some pictures of them, but I can't for the life of me make it post.

Anyway, I thought maybe a hot water bottle, but I don't have one. Should I stop worrying (right, that's gonna happen) ?

If there 4 wks old then I wouldn't worry too much.

If your worried they might get too cold then cover their brooder with a blanket or something.

Hope this helps. I hope your lights come back on soon ...

They do have a lot of feathers on them by now, so it is not as concerning as if they were day olds. But I think a hot water bottle wouldnt hurt what are you using to keep yourselves warm? Maybe just moving them in where you are??? Im still learning a lot but hope this helps a bit. My hubby says maybe a propane heater???

Maybe someone else will jump in with more ideas.

Thanks for the answers, I figured I was being silly. They seem to be in an in between feathery stage, I am wondering if they were not a full two weeks when I got them.
We heat with a wood stove, so 'we' were o.k., but my cats would have welcomed the girls with open mouths.

Both of my felines are pretty timid, so once the girls have grown up we will all be one happy family.
They are Ovi chick, Sasha, Nicki and Brooksie.
this place is way better than Facebook.

YES it is better than Facebook, my son was just teasing me about that today. He says so how are the FB people, I said... Im on BYC... FB people were boring this morning. LOL Glad to hear your chicks are doing well! We sure wouldnt wanna give those kitties any wrong ideas. Our little kitten does look at the chicks like they are toys but runs from the big chickens... they are scary! Love the names!!!!

I did it!! This is my sister and the girls on their first outing.
They are so funny, they fuss like anything when I pick them up, but then when I let them perch they will stay forever.

Heating pad with a large jar of water setting on it works too! The water in the jar radiates the heat from the heatin pad. Not alot but enough. aslong as its not one of those stinking pads with a timer! I hate those darn things!!!!!

Good Luck and God Bless!
