My Grandma's sewing machine ( thoughts and pics )

I have my Grandmothers old sewing machine. It's in the basement though as it is in a small cabinet. It's not a singer, but a Kenmore. It's grey cast iron and has two speeds, forward and reverse. It is all electric and is in a gorgeous walnut cabinet. You have to lift it out of the base so you have to have some strength for that. I learned to sew on that because my mother's singer was just too darned complicated at the time.

Mom had one of those singers from the late 60's early 70's with all the cogs you could put in for different patterns. So for Christmas one year I got Nana's old sewing machine and Mom taught me to sew. I still have that machine. I'd probably sooner sell a kidney.

WoW,
Thanks for posting this. My dad gave me the old treadle Singer he & mom bought at the San Jose Flea Market in the 60's. I just looked up the serial number and it is 1879. Never thought it was that old. No great stories about it, but I do remember mom using it as a kid.

Laney my mom has one those!! I tried to use it in high school for Home Ec. and couldn't do squat with it! Imp I'd love to see yours!

Writer, I have my Mom's singer from the 60's with all the cogs and I can't do diddly on it. I get it up and working and then everything get stuck underneath the plate. I know it's a tension problem but I'll be darned if I know if it's the machine that's broke of me.

I just let my husband do all the sewing.

It has many original pieces in the drawers, even a leather strap that was the belt.

Imp- As you can see I'm not big on dusting. That's the cats job.

My mom's had the cogs (should've been a 70's model), I could never get them to work.

Maybe I'll get brave and try to figure out how to use it.

You'll have to post more pix of yours when you get the cabinet.
