This morning when I went to let the chickens out and feed/water I noticed my guineas alerting to something in the dirt beside an old dead tree stump. I looked and didn't see anything and went about my business. A few minutes later I was about to change the water right beside the guineas who were still in a semi-circle feverishly barking at something on the ground right under their beaks and more guineas on the edge of the rooftop right above them were screaming about it, too. I looked again and only 2 feet away I saw it move... I was so startled because it was huge and right beside me. I ran and got a flat edge shovel, took careful aim and killed it!
Now I realize that the camouflauge of this snake in the dry Texas dirt up against an oak tree is about as perfect as it gets! I was looking straight at it (because of the Guineas) and did not see it till it moved!
I'll be wearing my boots out there from now on!
They earned their keep for the year!
