My jumbo brown coturnix eggs arrived today! They are so tiny and delicate and beautifully spotted.

I thought, for a few hours, that I wasn't going to get them! They were sent via 2-day delivery but without a signature requirement. This means that instead of being dropped at my door, they are dropped in the neighbourhood SuperBox for me to pick up with my key. Unfortunately, we just moved and my key doesn't arrive until Monday.

Canada Post head office said there was nothing they could do...and my eggs would be cooked by Monday! I called my town's small post office to see if there was anything they could do. They took my info and said they'd call me back.

A few hours later my personal postal carrier called me! I explained the nature of the package...and she understood completely! Thank goodness for small town life...they understand eggs. Within minutes she hand delivered them to my door. Thanks Sherry!

Opening the box...how many will be broken or chipped?
Where are the eggs?

There they are! So carefully wrapped.

28 in total...I ordered 24, hearing that quite a few of these delicate eggs would probably break before they arrived. But, she packed a few extra...and only 3 were broken! So I have 25 hatchable eggs! I'm considering now how many I can put in based on how many I could care for given the hatch rate this time of year. I'll let you know the number.

Thanks for letting me share!

Holding steady at 38.5c and 45% humidity. PERFECT!!!

However....Ack! I had a temperature spike last night! My husband slept in the basement last night and that's why. My incubator is incredibly sensitive to ambient temperature....I have it in the most temperature-stable room in the house. A basement room with no windows and no vents. It is, however, affected by the temperature of the family room, right next to it.

So, with DH snoring away and creating the Sleep Inferno, as I call his internal furnace, the temp went up slightly on the eggs. It went up to 104f... I've been trying to keep it at 102 even, on top of the eggs. Hopefully nothing comes of it, and I've read of much worse spikes with good hatches...but it we don't get a hatch, this is what I'm blaming. So, DH can't sleep in the basement anymore. LOL.

Today is Day 5. Only 12 more to go.

After reading your message, Farrier, I wondered if I could see anything inside these eggs on Day 5. There is one, out of the twenty-two, that is almost pure white with very very little mottling. So, I got it out over my mini-LED flashlight. Sure enough, there was a tiny baby and lots of veining! I tried another and saw more veining although no baby (spots in the way) and tried one more only to see it glow empty (or too early/small/hidden). Very cool! I was surprised, actually, at how easily I could see through the shells. I thought they would be much darker.

Also, I have a still air without a thermostat. I want to avoid a temp spike like last night, but am hopeless about wiring electronics. So I bought an oven/bbq wireless thermometer. The probe goes into the bator and the remote, displaying the temp, goes on my belt. LMAO. I don't have to get out of bed at 2, 3 and 4am anymore. It matches up, within 0.1 degree, with the other thermometer I am using. YAY! Now I can obsess from anywhere in the house!

Oh, and the best part is that if it hits 102.5f an alarm goes off to notify me.
