My Hatching Journey: the Adventures of a Complete Newbie

End tally: 4 chicks!

One had to be culled due to intestines coming out. At first, it was just a teeny piece of yolk left, but it was so active (backflipping out of the cup??!) That it got worse. :hit

One CCL girl
One wellie OE girl
One cuckoo marans OE boy
One Sapphire, unknown

One of almost every breed..... I'm happy!

Still haven't figured out why most of the die off comes after lockdown though..... :idunno
They just never pip. Eggtopsies results normal...... No shrinkwrapping or anything.

Well, that's not horrible!

We may never know what causes DIS's. So many factors to consider. Parents genetics, shell quality, differences caused by setting multiple breeds at one time (different growth rates, etc) or maybe they just weren't meant to hatch. I was really pulling for a brahma for you!

But the bright side is you keep learning, and still have some new chicks!!

Yeah... Learning, slowly, but learning! Twasn't expecting much of anything with these, it is just the massive amount that die at lockdown that bothers me....... Last batch was terrible, and they were not shipped. And, I have set eggs from five different flocks with similar results with each one.

And thanks, I'll get that brahma someday!!! :hugs

Yes.... New chicks!!! One of which is a CCL. Did I mention I LOVE CCL? :love

I'll get pics of the new peepers soon!

Did the others look really wet at eggtopsy time?  I assume your air cells were on target at lockdown time?  Scratching my head for reasons....

I don't think so.... I have two pics of eggtopsy on last batch. Haven't eggtopsied these ones yet but will soon. Yeah, aircells were fine....

The yolk seems off color in the photos, which I don't remember seeing when I eggtopsied. (infection sign?) But I wasn't feeling the best that day so I mighta just missed it.
