My Hatching Journey: the Adventures of a Complete Newbie

And I thought I was a bad enabler!!

I might
Do it!!! I want to live vicariously though you!!!!

Liz, I nearly cry if I accidentally kill a mole while digging..... Gonna take me a long, long while to work up to chickens!
I can do birds that i know are food, currently all pets but if one got really sick or injured I didn't think I would have a problem pulling out my axe

Take them away as soon as they hatch .Or after a couple of days won't hurt . and broody chicks don't grow as fast as brooder chicks .At least I don't think so :idunno

But that raises another "something": them mommas are so sweet I feel like an evil bear taking their babies away! I might have to though.

But the last time I had a hen go broody, she hatched one lone chick. At 24 hrs old, it drowned..... :( She went broody AGAIN a few days later :barnie

Calls are next on my wish list, but I really should just wait till next spring.

I've culled a few little ones with leg issues. Its sad, but best in the long run. I use a butcher knife to the neck. :(

I sold 2 this evening that were only 2-weeks old. Took right out from under momma. I felt horrible about it too.

I've never met a bird I didn't name......

I have a problem with that. I need to stop thinking of them all as pets.

I use ether in a "gas chamber"...... Quick enough that I can close the lid while I can still see.

Yall stop that!! :gig

I can't do it until I move the current ones to my farm, and I'm not sure when we will be ready for that. I'm shocked I got the go-ahead from my hubby anyway! :D

But he has talked about a new spot in the yard for a new duck pen, so maybe I'll get him on it soon.
