My Hatching Journey: the Adventures of a Complete Newbie

Exactly... I'm actually liking this number of chickens, because I can pick them all up every day and I know what is "normal" for each chicken. Like Pebbles is on the skinny side but is not loosing weight at all. BSL hens are usually a bit plump and I keep them from hogging the food. Jace eats what she wants and no more, and the EE's are perfect. When I had 45 chickens I couldn't do that.. So, hard as it is, I might limit my number of chickens..

I have a dozen, well 9 adults right now, and will only keep 12-15 total by fall. It's a good number for my space, my chores, and my feed bill.

Sorry, but I'm not a believer in "set all the eggs" because it just doesn't work for me.

I'm already eating some of the ones I set aside for hatching.

Edit: last time I had over 30 chickens, I lost 1 to fly strike... That is when I sold some, and started being obsessive about checking them... Fly strike is a horrid way to die. She had so much butt fluff I didn't notice until I almost couldn't pick her up without putting my hand in maggots.

Yeah, I didn't feel like eating for an hour or two after I found her either. She was sitting in a pile of blood and maggots...

Worst part? It was dark in the coop..... So before I realized what it was, I held her up to my FACE to inspect... Now, I am not squeamish... But that ranked pretty high up in the gross factor.

well only had one piece and it has been a rough night for me anyway not a thought that sticks with me tonight so your good . and I'm thinking well knowing that I have to many . so am selling every weekend . we have a livestock market that sells chickens. you never know what they will bring though. Ravyn and both took chickens this weekend won't even what they brought till Thursday when the check comes .all or most all the next chicks will go to the sale barn.
