I rely heavily on my roosters to warn and protect the flock. I don't cherish crows or any wild bird hanging around our hens since they bring disease and bugs, but I guess that's better than hawks.

I can add another method to help keep hawks away - Fishing line. String it, crisscrossed over the run and free range areas. Hang a bit of shiny string, you know the kind you tie a present with, from the fishing line so that it flutters in the breeze.

Heres a tip. Let them free range after 5. Hawks go their nests before then. My girls range for a few hours in the early evening and so far, so good.
