OH my goodness. I never knew a bear could or would do that. (I'll stay in Georgia and fight the mosquitos instead) I wish I could help but since I am so far away Here is a (((((((HUG))))))). I'll keep you and your daughter in my prayers.

I have to tell you, Emzyy, that you're wrong.

We live in an area with 10s of thousands of acres of open, uninhabited forest, and bears still come. For bears it comes down to where's the easiest place to get a meal.

ANOTHER family here in the SAME town as me & the OP had their entire flock of chickens wiped out except for 1 lone hen (the poor baby must be just too truamatized like MINE) .

I can only hope that no one is late picking up a kid from a bus stop etc. talk about a even bigger tragedy waiting to happen.

You just called a 15 year old girl a hipocryte. Thought I would share that with you.

Also if you read the OP and the following posts you will find that they are in an area that they can get no help due to the protest groups. They are trying to get help to have a hunt but I fear someone will have to be hurt or killed before they change their ignorant stand.

When I put in OP I did not mean the original poster, I meant the other poster. next time I will be more specific.
yes I know exactly how old the child is, but no matter. H/She is old enough to understand that as long as there are people and animals living in close proximity there is going to be dangerous encounters,
I also read there is no help available to the original person.
Its like that everywhere, NH has a hunt in the fall also. is it helping NO it isnt,
People still put out Bear feeders then have the audacity to complain the bears are eating out of them. Or the bear is being a problem , kills dogs or worse broke into the hosues because the feeders were empty.
As for tree huggers yes they have a place in society but they have to understand when they go getting all fanatical they must be willing to give up every luxury they have now in order to back up their words. Other wise its just empty words.
I am 50 and female, I hunt I fish , I attend F&G meetings to insure our rights are protected.
I am for controled management. It has been proven the so called Birth Control methods tried have not worked.
Selective Hunts are the only effective way to help People such as the Original Poster.
My heart goes out to anyone devistated by preditor attacks. with out control of some sort the next Victim may not be birds, rabbits, cattle sheep it WILL be Human.

Whats to stop this Sow Bear with cubs from coming back in the middle of the night , breaking into this familys home and killing one or more of the family?
what then are they told, well after the first attack you should have moved away? You knew the bear would be back. ugh some people just dont get it.

I'm sorry but roaming just on this side of town I've counted 11 bear cubs! No one here puts out their garbage until garbage day & the bears know when that is & wait at the bottom of the driveways! We are not in a suburban area but a rural one where just 10 15 yrs. ago we NEVER saw this kind of activity & I ALWAYS fed the birds! I would not DARE do that now nor would anyone in the neighborhood. But the bears do not need us to because they can just eat all of the CHICKENS, DUCKS & other farm animals they want bread into garages etc. & eat till their hearts delight & walk away unscathed! We can not *shoot a gun* here no rubber bullets, no salt bullets etc. there is *no method of adversion* except if the police are here when the bear is to shoot the rubber bullet..... As we speak I've put the electric fence up around the chicken coop & technically I'm in violation of town ordinaces! We are *not allowed to protect ourself* & there hasn't been a bear hunt here since I believe 2004! And if a person DARES to shoot a bear in *self defence here* they will be harrassed to a degree of which they never imagined & they'll end up moving out! We can't understand why there are no more farmers in NJ well they are not allowed to farm! Their stock would be continually wiped out along with their crops! The "rural area" I'm now in use to be full of farms & now????? none...

I'm not sure how recently this happened, but a woman about 15 miles from me was attacked along with her 7 year old daughter when they went out for a walk by thier house. The mother laid on top of the girl to protect her, and they played dead, but mom got a big chunk taken out of her rear end just the same...

ohmylord........... that is so scary. The "bear people" are going to say you're not suppose to play dead with a black bear but fight back..... we're also suppose to be telling potential victims "don't look it in the eye & don't run". I'm sure when faced with a bear this will all be helpful? Oh & of course the standby "they were here first".

I saw this thing on the internet. I thought it was kind of funny.

The Forest Service has issued a BEAR WARNING in the national forests for this summer. They're urging everyone to protect themselves by wearing bells and carrying pepper spray.

Campers should be alert for signs of fresh bear activity, and they should be able to tell the difference between Black Bear dung and Grizzy Bear dung.

Black Bear dung is rather small and round. Sometimes you can see fruit seeds and/or squirrel fur in it.

Grizzly Bear dung has bells in it, and smells like pepper spray!

Haha! That is funny! Glad we only have black bears here!
A couple of winters ago my daughter was being attacked by an owl on her way to the bus every morning. I called the mnistry and they told her to whistle when approaching that corner to let the owl know she was coming. They wouldn't do anything about it, and it was getting dangerous...but after a few weeks it found another place to terrorize I guess:>)
I'm thinking I'm going to start charging our ministry time and mileage to get my kids safely to the bus pretty soon unless they do something about the wildlife around here when they become a threat:>)

Bears like many animals live by a code of might makes right. They do not acknowledge land ownership or any other form of ownership. They will do as they please, because they are the 500 pound gorilla in the room. Tree huggers who anthropormorphise animals too much tend to have a form of self delusion. ie mental illness.
When dealing with chickens you have to think like a chicken. When dealing with bears, think like a bear. You have to be dominate all the time, day and night, winter, summer, garbage day. After all the human body is food.
