My heart is broke...that stupid *** bear UPDATE!!!! Problem gone!

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "you have to be dominate all the time". There's only one thing that would equal a bear & a human & that would be gun powder & lead & once again I'll say it's against the law. There is *no dominate* when a bear is breaking through the window or garage doors. People are waking up in themiddle of the night here to bears in the kitchen. exactly how are we suppose to be "dominate"? I agree to a bear the "human body is food" and yes someone is going to get hurt! However to say one needs to be dominate all the time, day and night, winter, summer, garbage day." makes it sound as though we're just all being passive aggressive & only upset when the bear is in our yards etc. I admit on a daily basis I'm actually thinking about things like *work* perhaps getting some sleep, edlerly parents & the responsibilities go on & on. So if I'm not sitting around 24/7 thinking "hhmmmmm how is this bear going to try to kill me or a family member here" it would be because I'm actually living a life as much as that is possible living where I do. We no longer are able to go walking/jogging alone or even with a dog, I wouldn't be poolside in a lounge chair just napping away because I'm lible to wake up to a bear in my face (this has happened here) if I'm in the back yard gardening etc. I have to have the radio going or I have to be singing or the dogs have to be making noise so the bears know that the dogs are there so they don't scale the fence. We are deligent with the "precautions" and yes when we see them coming we'll pull out pot lids & air horns etc. but a bear learns pretty quick (much like kids) that it's "all talk& no bite" The only steady dominate thing would be to pull out a gun & shoot & that is against the law. And when someone has the gall to shoot in real self defence we then have the B.E.A.R. people taking the place of the bears......

And of course everyone gets to hear about the "cute stories" with the cute pictures of bears being treed by declawed kitties & the poodle who barked off another but you don't see the chickens coops that had been torn into with the carnage strewen over the entire yard...... I believe it was the little poodle mix that made the front of MSN after he barked away the bear, but my 9 wk old pullets that the "cute bears" were eating parts of in the trees we didn't see that on the 6 oclock news...

Sorry Mom2cool, I was speaking more to the B.E.A.R. people and not you. I come from the old school where if something is actively after my chickens... it dies.
I still only use catchem alive traps and I use to relocate them out of the county, but after a while and too many losses. I bought a trappers license and was legal to kill the preditors and did so. Without ever using any bait. And the trap hard up against my coop.
The city was concerned at one time but they backed off when I told them about my license.
If bears are getting into houses I would purchase a large caliber hand gun and really know how to use it. As well as let your kids fire it to know how powerfull a thing it is. I can remember as a 12 year old boy getting the opportunity to fire a 32 caliber pistol and bearly being able to hold on to it when I fired it. I also saw what bullets can do to animals and respected guns because of it.
I am truly sorry about your losses. I can relate to that all too well. Next spring if you would like some NH or Black Jersey eggs, give me a PM.

I'm sorry too estpr13 I'm just so ultra sensitive to all of this these days & well especially the other day because I'd lost my barrred rock etc. When someone speaks of the normal that we'd all start with to "make sure your area is clean of food etc." it tends to make some of us here just wanna spit because this is what is continually harped on by the ignorant that *think they know what they're talking about* when in reality they don't... So when the *normal people* come up with a normal answer we're all jumping onthem without reason really. I too was brought up understanding what a gun has the ability to do to an animal (or a human) & so had a healthy respect for it. While we don't have a hand gun here that would be sutible for this purpose we do have guns here. For me to fire it however it's going to knock me back & so I'm only gonna get 1 clean shot. We've actually had this very conversation here because for me to even practice really isn't a possibility. I told hubby to give my shoulder a shove in the same fashion I'd get firing & while he gave me a shove he said he "could do what it's going to do without hurting you. It's really going to knock you a LOT more than that." Though he is going to work with me on loading so I'll at least be able to use it if I really have to. As for my kids well they're all young adults here & are actually more of a protection for me that vise versa. One is actually a new officer in uniform and so yes will know how to shoot too. The cops here are the only ones allowed to use the rubber bullets from the shot gun to "recondition" the bears to be afraid of humans and yards etc. And according to my son the bears that are in yards that have been shot with the rubber bullet "know the sound of the shot gun pump & will run on the sound of it." And so yea we do try to pay attention to the things that are effective to help recondition. The OP here had a link to a blog she had with pictures & you can see in I think the 2nd or 3rd set her airhorn. We've all got all this stuff & some times it'll help but really nothings going to stop them. Something real interesting we've all noticed with all the times we've had to "scare them off" the male cubs always stand out because even as cubs they're just a tad more obstanant or aggressive. I was out shooing them one day with pot lids (from a healthy distance of my deck with a door right behind me) & they were all climbing back over the fence to retreat except 2 that just looked to mom as if "well are we not going in?"

One time I came home from food shopping & I'd been bring groceries in from the car through the garage to the kitchen. Of course 1 doesn't stop to close the over head doors in between & in a smaller sized rubber maid garbage can in the garage I keep the dry dog food. When I came in with the bags of frozen stuff I took the time in the kitchen to put the stuff in the freezer before going back for more bags & on my way back out there were 4 cubs *sitting in the garage* around the turned over can & all crossed legged like teens at a pizza party munching away! Normally I would not *ever* leave the garage doors open because of this very thing but I don't open & close in between bringing things in the house.. It's just the fact that it's a fast as you walking in & out that the bear will just be there you know? And when we point these things out we're told "If you don't like it move out & go back to the city". What "they don't understand" is that living in the country things are usually done very different.....

Oh & as we speak hubby is out putting the electric fence around the back yard enclosure so that hopefully we can keep them from the yard. Imagine if you will 5 black bear cubs *inside a split rail fenced in area* with mom on their heels & now you're in that enclosed area *with them* but not close enough to get into the house.

That said You have no idea how many people have been cornered in their homes.... One guy went out a window in a bedroom to a neighbor to call for help. It's just a matter of time before someone really gets hurt. Anyway I really am sorry if I was ultra sensitive the other day & actually I have a new crew that's just about ready for the coop there (6 buff orpingtons) but I have to let them get a little bigger because the 1 Black Austrolorp pullet I had left from the older crew was a bit too aggressive for them the other day. I'm hoping they'll be able to be intergrated soon because I think she's really mourning the Barred Rock. And thank you for the offer of a few of yours that's really very kind...

I have posted once on this subject and ya all know how I feel about bears. While I was cutting wood today whith a few friends, I mentioned this subject. We think we may have a good answer for your problem if they (B. E. A. R. people) live in the area. First you need to go fishing and catch as many bluegil as you can. Any fish will do but you need a lot of them. Next grind them up as fine as possible. Now make sure the BEAR poeple are not home and smear some of the fish all around their deck and doors. And throw some in their your. You can bet if a bear is within a mile of that house it will be there, and if the fish is placed right. Will you get the picture. See how they act after the bear tears up their place. The smell will last awhile even if the wash it down. A bear can smell an unopened can of tuna fish at about a mile according to the rangers at Yosomite. I have to believe them for they deal with bear every day.

Panner in my best Jackie Gleason impression let me say You slay me...... LOL The scary thing Panner is that these wackos think stuff like that is "cute" they are really out there & just would have no clue of the magnitude of damage that can really be done... 1 of those B.E.A.R. people who was *lecturing everyone else* about cleaning their garbage cans & not feeding the birds etc. was eventually *arrested for feeding the bears*! The Dept. of Wildlife, Fish & Game suspected something because she always had like gangs of bears hanging around her yard & well they were all there waiting to be feed! Mean while all her neighbors for like 2 & 3 yrs. had been having to deal with all of a sudden all these bears in their garbage where they'd never had an issue before. & her answer to them was always to "clean your garbage cans & stop with the bird seed you're attracting them to your yard & then getting made they're there". Etc. etc. & *she would tell others it was against the law to feed the bears*. LOL I swear if I didn't live here & someone else was telling me this stuff I wouldn't even believe it. Her videos (more than 1) made all the news channels & is very popular withpeople saying "awwww how cute" etc. If you google black bear in hammock all the news channels come up along with AOL & you tube.... Here's a link to one of the youtube videos of them. look at how many bears there Panner.

Hey Panner remind me never to make you mad LOL. I have told you before but I will say it again you are one of the very few people that I have total respect for. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks

I am still scared and can not always fall to sleep easily. We had a window open for ventilation and I had to walk across the floor treatment , ruin it, close the window, and repair the floor at like 3 am.... I know that bear is gone but there are more... I never thought I would be so scared and not even realize it. I have been unable to fall asleep till very early morning hours. Some nights are worse than others. I was up till4:30 am last night.. Last night was one of the most vivid of why I was not sleeping. I am a night owl anyway but not like this. I just had thoughts of things being in the house, would it eat my indoor pets, was it eating my birds, were they ok, would it come ina nd fall asleep somewhere in here, how would I get out...? Craziness just craziness....

Oh my goodness! Why why why are animals worth MORE than humans now?? That bear killed 52 people and the DOG who got a bear cub is in trouble? The dog (and owner) should be the hero of that town!!

I am a bit torn to be a mother and understand that DRIVE to feed your young. Wow. I hate that the bear steals her food, but hate to think of her starving and having three babies looking to her for food. THAT being said--the bears need to STAY in their woods and leave us alone in our homes and we should leave them alone in their woods.

To value an animal OVER a person, though? I wonder if these people who value an animal's life OVER a human life has children or ever learned to love others? God created these wonderful animals, and I love mine soo much, but--but to put their value above a human-God's most precious creation is wrong in my opinion:

"Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea. They are given into your hand. (Genesis 9:1-2)

I respect what God created and I enjoy my animals every second, but I know that He put us in charge of them--and respect that as well.

At least hubby and I are doing our part to "be fruitful and multiply.." hehehe

My two cents, anyway.

Remember! Opinions are like belly buttons; everyone's got one and some are smellier and bigger than others. ;-)

Sorry so sorry about your coop!
