This Delaware is less than a year old. She had a cold, I gave her a few injections of LA200 and she was back fine, and suddenly developed a limp. I have had an ongoing issue with leg mites and at first thought was that, but now I don't think so. It has been maybe 2 weeks, I have her isolated as others began to pick at her and she is in pain with this leg, cannot seem to stand on it at all now. I got her out yesterday and soaked in epsom salts. Previously have used ivermectin injectible on her skin for the mites, have used vaseline, and lately used Vetrycin, triple antibiotic, A&D ointment. She has some pink spots on her legs/feet, I have no idea what that is. At first I thought bumblefoot, but I don't see no scab. I'm going to try the soak tomorrow again. So far the first helped none. Here are some photos. I appreciate any assistance. TIA

Welcome To BYC
Where are you located in the world (state/country)?

I know chickens can be hard to photograph at times, do you have some one that can help you hold her so we can get a better look at the bottom of the foot and of the other one that is blurry? Especially where the second photo is circled.

You mention she has a cold? What was that like - respiratory illness - do you happen to know the cause? Wet Fowl Pox, Mycoplasma, Infectious Bronchitis, etc.?

Any chance the red spots could be from insect bites - ants maybe?

Look forward to more photos and information. Hopefully more people will chime in with their thoughts as well.

I will get her out in the morning and try to get some better photos. I live in middle Tennessee USA. I said she had a cold, but it did not seem to be respiratory, eyes and nose clear, but she was just not eating and standing off to herself. She might come out to eat (I allow a little free range when I am home, and they LOVE me to throw out scratch or bread) but she would not eat, just walk away to herself. I gave her a few injections of LA 200, and she finally perked back up and her appetite has been good. I would not think there would be ants.....it has been cold here.

Did she have a leg band on?
What do you normally feed?
She may have a little frostbite on the feet as well. I would inspect the bottom of both feet for any scabs that would indicate bumblefoot.

The pink spots are irritation from something, some almost look infected. Can you see a vet?
I would soak her feet daily in the epsom salts, then apply the vaseline under the scales. For the pink spots try the Vetericyn, but she likely needs antibiotic treatment.

I have LA 200 here, would that be appropriate? I asked the vet here about a chicken once and he knows nothing for chickens. Ditto with the vet I take my dogs to.

I also have plain penicillin injectible and combi-penn. OH!! And I feed 22 layer pellet and a 11 or 13 grain scratch. They also get veggie peels (carrots and celery mainly, no potato), melon rinds in the summer, and let them out to free range at least a couple days a week. And a few slices of bread. I wonder about the quality of the food. Is from a mill in Guntersville, Al. One hen lays a very brittle, thin shelled egg with like calcium deposits. I have had chickens for 20 years and never had these issues, which I have attributed to the different breeds. But then I bought these Delawares from that same fed store and they kept pasty butt, they kept these chicks in an open feed she with a heat light but good heavens it was cold and drafty as heck, wide open on one side. Never again.

Well, flipping her upside down, and good exam, it is worse than I thought. She is red, her skin is very red, and skin is flaky and peeling. It was not like this a couple of weeks ago when I gave her the injections of LA 200. She has the same on her thighs and down her legs that are covered in feathers, a black crusty sore. I gave her a dose of ivermec injectible on her back recently. I soaked her in epsom salt and one of the gray scales came off that one leg. Covered her legs in triple antibiotic and vaseline and put her in a small crate in here in the house. She might be ok, it very warm and sunny out today. I thought about bringing her in, put her in a large plastic storage box I have for new chicks. Now she has a black spot on the bottom of that one foot, but it is soft and not getting any bigger. But her legs feel feverish in spots, to me. I also gave her a dose of LA200. I got her out s she spilled water, and checked her heck to see if there was anything, and even up to her neck, there is yellow crust everywhere. What is this? Do I need to destroy her?
