My hen crows!

I thought we were the only ones, our neighbors think we are crazy. She looks like a hen, walks like a hen but crows like a roo. We have 4 weeks until laying but we think she is our dominate female. I guess you never know

And I thought I was crazy:

The other day, my 8 week old cockeral was trying to start his usual conversation from the garage while I was in the kitchen. When he crows we look out and talk to him, probably the start of future grief. Anyway, right on the tail of his juvenile voice changing exclamation, came a deeper crowing noise. I looked out to comment on him and thought I saw my 8 week old black star pullet in the crowing position and heard it again. I finally convinced myself that it wasn't true.

Then yesterday morning, I was in the garage and disappeared into the car for a moment. That evoked another round of "Where'd she go?" from our cockeral. It was answered with a deeper crow from the pullet. I watched as she made her next effort.

I've been sure from the beginning that she's a Black Star pullet, her coloring is very typical. But I'm beginning to wonder! She's a big girl and a early developer. If she had to buy shoes, they'd be a size 12. She outweighs and looks down on the cockeral, but he hasn't noticed. I don't think they've definitely decided who's boss yet.

I don't need two roosters, I need hens.

They are something else! We have a RIR rooster that crowed twice (he was the first one to do it) and hasn't crowed since. We thought he (Pheonix) was a she until he let out an almost perfect crow the first time. It's a puzzle for sure...

We sell pullets and I have had several people want to return a "hen" because they think that it is a rooster because it is making noise and crowing. Well, I have gotten several nice eggs out of "roosters". I just wanted to post this clip that I got the other day of my broody hen making a lot of noise. If you are unfamiliar with chickens and you hear this noise you might think that you have a rooster :)
