I discovered one of my hens being listless this morning. Sh was easy to catch, which was the first sign something was wrong. I picked her up and immediately found a blood mess near her tail feathers. upon further inspection, i found a quarter sized wound that was looked pretty deep.I suspect one of my buff orpingtons who seems to like to peck other chickens. How do I treat this deep wound? I put some triple antibiotic ointment in it and have the chicken isolated.
thank you.

For wounds I would use betadine, chlorhexadrene (hibiclens,) peroxide (just once,) or saline to cleanse the wound, and then apply your favorite plain antibiotic ointment twice day. Keep her away from flies, as maggots and flystrike can be horrible in summer. Separate her in a cage within the coop until the wound starts to heal. Products such as BluKote may be used later to hide the wound. If you are sure the aggressive hen was responsible, I would seaparte her for a week so that she is lowered in the pecking order. If that doesn't help, you may want to re-home her. Bad tasting creams such as Nustock, BenGay or other menthol ointment, Vicks, and anti-pick lotions may be good to prevent pecking. Beak trimming (slight) or pinless peepers may help with a habitual pecker.

I love a product called wonderdust! works great on gaping wounds by killing necrotic flesh and slowly aiding in healing while keeping area dry and free from picking and flies.

thank you so much! I cut away the bloodied feathers and put some wonderdust on her. she is in a separate cage for now. I'll keep an eye out for the unsub. ;)
