Well I have this partridge silkie hen that I though all this time was a hen. Well I noticed the other day that "she" was starting to get a few streamers in "her" tail and on "her" head. Today "she" was letting out a very sad crow. Since my other young silkie that I knew was a rooster was killed by rats I was so upset since I thought all I had left were hens. YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY!!! This made my day today! He walks around now and flaps his wings and lets out that sad sounding crow, then looks around like, did that come outta me?!

but he takes very good care of his girl so its OK!

Glad your happy for a roo.

Very happy he is a roo!!! I believe between poisoning the rats, that cat catching them and the rat snap traps they are gone or mostly gone as since I have started my mission of destroy the rodents I have not lost any more chickens to the nasty things. The stupid rats started out with younger half grown silkies, the went for the full grown ones! They made off with 10 silkies before i got it stopped!

Yea!!!! I love silkie roos. I actually had a hatch that was 2 roos and a hen, and they all lived happily together.

You must have some pretty big rats if they're taking chickens. I've never heard of a rat that took anything except maybe chicks. How big are these rats?

These rats were huge. The biggest one I caught in the snap trap was about 8 inches long not including his tail! I know the cat caught at least 6. I caught 4 in the snap trap, plus then I started poisoning them and who knows how many that killed. I thought I had a weasel or mink coming in and killing them since it was such a small hole that they were coming in. I kept trying to catch a weasel or mink and nothing. One night I sat out there in the barn and waited for something to happen. Well I fell asleep on a couple bales of hay and in the middle of the night I awoke to the chickens going crazy and I flipped on the light and here sits 2 rats tag teaming one of my silkie hens. They were jumping on her back and the other going at her throat. I shot one of them with a pellet rifle and the other got away. That is when I set up a snap trap and locked the cat up in that barn.
