My hen Corazon is about 6 months old and was attacked by my now former puppy. She has a huge gash in the throat chest area. My husband noticed her sitting in the yard by herself but she has always been a loner so I really didn't think to much about it. When Corazon turned around I saw the hole in her chest and got a little panicky so my husband and I knew we had to catch her and check her out. She has always been a little squimish around my husband so naturally she bolted as soon as she knew what was up. After getting her in the coop I was able to pick her up and carry her in. I took her a bath to try and clean up the area. I believe she was hurt on Thursday and this is happening on Saturday morning. We attempted to clean the area really good with a toothbrush to get all the dead skin off and then I applied a layer of sugar to the wound hoping to stop any infection from starting. I attempted to tape up the wound with some surgical tape hoping that it was still fresh enough to get her flesh to stick to itself if I could support(tape) the outside together. The cut is right below her breast bone and it looks as if the muscle kind of separated and is way lower than it should be. I got her wrapped up and went back to check on her a little later I saw that she had stretched out and the wound was no longer holding shut. I decided that we would leave it alone as she had already been this way for a couple of days so maybe it would just heal this way. I thought she was dropping food into the wound but noticed it was coming out of the side of her wound. I tried to find a vet around here that would help her but to no avail. She is my first baby to hatch and survive and I just don't want to part with her but I also don't want her to suffer. My analysis: She is still producing solid stools with white which I've read is the water mixed with the stool. So I am assuming that she is still able to retain some of what she is eating and drinking. So last night after researching here and on the chicken anatomy I decided to take another look at what was happening. My son gave her some water and immediately I could see where it was coming from so I took her another bath and then noticed the food just fell out of her as she started splashing around in the bath. So I located what I believe is the tubing of the crop. I was for sure it was the crop so I decided to try and sow it up because I was scared any kind of glue might stop up the tubes. Unfortunately, there are still gaps where the water is seeping out. This morning I took another look at the anatomy and believe that her crop was ripped out and just a really small portion that connects to the incoming tube and outgoing tube remains. I was wondering if anyone had this happen or if anyone knows if it is possible for her to survive without it. I want to help her the best I can and if I need to help her move on I will. I read about some glues that people have used to seal up the crop and was thinking about attempting to dab a little around the outside to try and make it more leak proof? Any advice I can get I would greatly appreciate it.
If you look at number 55 I believe that she has almost the entire bulge of that sac missing. I drew a red line where I think it was severed at.

4/4/13 - I am a little sad that I didn't get any responses or opinions to this post. Anyways I guess I will leave a status just in case anyone else runs into this situation. I must have left a small hole in the crop area towards the top of the crop area but I feed her some hard boiled egg yolks the day after stitching her up and only a little piece came out of the crop. It looks like she is able to retain water and food pretty well for the most part now. I have not done the vetbond glue or any other stitching because the tissue to use is just not very accessible. It does look like the tissue of the crop is sticking though where the stitches were place so that is awesome. I have been feeding her crumble with water to make it into a mash and only in small amounts because I am worried she may tear open the stitches if what is left of the crop gets to full. This morning she woke up pretty fiesty and actually bit my arm leaving a little swollen spot. I think she is getting tired of being all cooped up.. The day before yesterday I let her out by the back door so her and her friends were able to see each other for about an hour. I didn't let her out into the yard for fear that she would bolt off and I wouldn't be able to catch her and observe what was happening. Or worse she might get the area dirty cause it was pretty muddy. I think she was stuck between a combo of being hungry and ready to run free and that may have lead to the aggressive behavior this morning. She has never done that before so it kind of had me wondering if chickens can contract rabies. I also noticed that the scabbing around the breast meat and in the lower neck area are starting to separate so it looks like the scabs are going to start falling off soon. The area under has a slight skin coating that is a little pink but it seems like she is going to be just fine. I just need to figure out how to cover up the exposed crop and trachea tube. I am going to start keeping her in the laundry room so that she can start moving around more cause I know the kennel doesn't let her walk around much. I'll keep this post updated for anyone that may be going through the same thing.
