I am new to chickens so I am not sure how to handle this problem. I have 20 healthy chickens and 1 healthy rooster that are about 6 months old. None of them have ever been pecked until today. When I went to collect eggs at noon our rooster has a nasty bloody area next to his tail and the hens wont leave it alone. It doesn't seem to bother him but i don't know how, it looks terrible. Should we pull him out? My husband thinks we are going to have to get rid of him. I want to stop this problem before it happens to more of them.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated

You need to remove him. Once chickens see blood, they just can't stop picking at it. Bring him in, clean him up. Buy some Blue Kote and coat him well. This will make him purple and the hens will leave him alone. Who knows what started the whole ruckus to begin with but, once blood was spotted, it was all out free for all!
