If you have cedar chips down or ammonia smell from poo and there is little ventilation in the coop, it could cause illness......

We live in MI, have had some very cold weather. I always open the poop door so they can go out if they choose, they can get under the coop and stay out of snow,which they do not like Are you giving them grit? They need it in the winter if they don't get out into some dirt. I also use deep litter wood chips with hay thrown on top to give them something to scratch at I also through BOSS, oats and scratch onto the floor so they can scratch around.Keeps them from getting bored. I have wooden roosts. no added heat, they seem to do fine. I would check for moisture fumes and crop problems if you are not giving grit. Good luck, hope you can find the problem. Don't give up on chickens. they are usually very hardy
