My hens are scared of the new feeder... should I paint it?

I've thought about adding a small feeder like this to the inside of my coop so they'll have access during the shorter days to food overnight.

That is a good idea. They can't get up in there and poo can they? Any chance on posting a 'how to' on assembling one?

I was hoping this would reduce the amount of feed ending up on the ground, but doesn't seem to compared to a store bought feeder. Although I'm not convinced it's the chickens making the mess or their 8yo keeper who insists on babying and hand feeding them when I'm not around... But it does keep the feed nice and dry up in the pipe.
