I think that's an interesting question. I would like to know how other folks handle it, but here's my answer:

Yes, they often bite. I get bitten often, when I get too close to the birds who aren't keen on humans.

But their bites do not hurt. Guess their jaws aren't strong enough to inflict much pain, but YES they bite me; I just don't care.

hmmm I agree it doesnt HURT persay but I think it startles me enough that reflexes kick in and I draw back so I am wondering about that because it must be hard to get ahold of their tiny necks and hold them in while they're doing that. It would be really awesome (grusome tho sorry) to see a video of someone doing this putting them in, etc.

There is a video on YouTube titled "Chicken Processing on Custer Family Farm" that begins with someone holding a chicken by its legs & installing it in a killing cone. It takes a small bit of doing, the bird is flapping & doesn't just slide in, the guy has to reach in and pull the head out. But these folks are very experienced and obviously know what they're doing, and do it quickly & well.

If you have the time, if you aren't doing dozens of birds in one day, you can take the extra time to calm the bird before installing it in the cone. You can rock it to "sleep", or stroke its chest, or just hold it upside down for a few moments until it relaxes. Then it might be easier to slide it into the cone.

If a chicken I was going to butcher bit me while in the cone, I wouldn't get upset knowing how soon I was going to bite him back!

perfect station. you can go into business and travel to someones home to process for cash! the only thing i would change is the exposed wood (which you said you were going to do already) to keep bacteria at bay. if i may offer up a suggestion?....i will anyway

grab a sheet of bathroom wall panel from the box stores. that white plastic stuff. liquid nails will keep it in place and clean up will be a breeze!

What hot box do you use to keep you pigs in the fence? Need to know b/c we can't close down our area, they keep breaking thru.
