I absolutely LOVE the fact that my Hubby is so into the chickens... he enjoys them almost as much as I do... just one thing... HE FEEDS THEM JUNK FOOD!

I realize you can give them a lot of things, most of which we have in the fridge, but cheese doodles and coffee cake is not a form of food I want them to get used to!

Thank goodness it's not all the time but over the weekend the chickens trampled over my white silkie (Dolly) to get to the cheese doodles! I of course wasn't home. Then I saw him walking out to the chicken coop with something in hand... when he was walking I asked him what he had... COFFEE CAKES! WHAT!?!?!?!

We have a stash of healthy food items for them... cantalope, oatmeal (raw), zuchinni, potatoes, you name it... but I don't want him giving them sugar and salt! I mean we have a HUGE waterer so I'm not worried about them getting hehyrated from the salt but I don't want them to be unhealthy!

Now that we have turkeys he has to be SUPER careful what he throws in there...

The chickens I find are perfectly happy just munching on the maple leaves we throw in...

Haha, junk food. Mine love junk food too...

But everything in moderation. They'll love you just as much if you present them with oat meal or other grains vs pastries. I swear though, if they see you eating it, they want it even more. Good thing it doesn't go the other way around.

LOL mine love the junk too but in moderation of course. ONe dutch hen will steal a donut and take off with it but shakes her head at fresh veggies while the others like 12 grain bread, tomatoes, lettuce, peas, fresh fruit, ect from the garden.

Hehe... over the weekend we went out to dinner and I saved 1/2 of my cheeseburger for my girls. I also borught home the bread that was leftover in the bread baskets. They ate the patty, cheese, onion, and tomato. They wouldn't touch the bun, the bacon, or the lettuce. They also only ate the bread that I broke into small pieces and hand-fed them. They couldn't be bothered to break it up themselves.

They're like 3 year-olds! They can be so picky.

My DH shakes his head b/c for years I've brought home part of my meals for cats, and now I'm bringing home meals for cats AND chickens!

All my friends know they don't DARE send those plates back to the kitchen or leave them for the busboy if there's a garnish on them like kale or parsley...

That's cute though.
I haven't caught DH feeding the chicks anything yet, but only time will tell. I've caught him in the coop enjoying the scenery and he fell asleep it was so peaceful.

LOL! These chickens have consumed our lives... I seriously have had a HUGE problem being the chicken lady. I have one who flocks to me (Robin)... and forget about walking to coop! I had a blackberry from the bush I was eating and then decided well they might like it... SO I FED IT TO THEM! OMG a pregnant woman sharing her food with CHICKENS!!!

DH throws them the old bread, and anything we don't really finish at dinner.

But I almost gagged when Robin ate a worm this evening! But he's my boy and ALWAYS gets the first treat!

Poor DH I keep after him about their health and feeding them junk food... here I'm thinking clogged arteries!

this reminds me of a story. my dad once found a hamster while crossing one of the covered bridges here. (he brings home anything) anyhow, he was feeding it seeds, etc but in the evening when he was watching tv he would set Fred up on the couch next to him and feed him venison bologna, chips and chocolate cookies. He died after a couple months, we still think he had a heart attack.
