My Husky is killing my chickens and ducks, I need help!

I don't know how effective electric fencing, given that a baited fence would get the dog to taste test it, would convince that hard headed, prey driven beast to avoid the birds. Our IF failed dog was pretty severely zapped by two heavy duty collars at once, and in the presence of chicken targets, ran through and didn't even yelp over it.
He was a stray adult mutt from a shelter, a lovely dog in so many ways, except for this! He was our eighth big bold dog with our IF, and every other dog, bar none, didn't go through the fence! Since he died, we've had several more dogs, all respectful of the IF.
@SundanceKid87, huskies can be very very tough too!
Are you using the IF system, or another brand? If IF, have you worked with the IF trainer over this? Had your collars and perimeter tested? If everything is maxed out and working properly, it's time to add fencing of another type.

As an option, I have a very powerful fence charger. If anything touches the wires they will hurt for a couple of days. One BYC member has the same fence charger as I have and she said her husband touched a wire and was sore for a couple of days afterwards. Here is a good web page with some good info.

This is my fence charger and it is very powerful. I do have a cutoff switch below it or I can unplug it. You wouldn't have to leave it on, only when your dog is out. Electric wires may not be an option for you but they work for me. You probably don't need a charger that is quite this powerful. Again, good luck...

This one should also do the job. At least 1 joule.

Huskies have an EXTREMELY high prey drive. Mixing them with chickens and ducks is never a good idea. Even trying to get them to coexist will not end well. If the chickens are out the dogs need contained in the house or in a kennel. If the dogs are out the other animals need contained in a very predator proof coop/run

Is the dog in your avatar a Husky?

Hey all,

This is my first post for this site. I am in DESPERATE NEED of help with my 4 year old husky killing my chickens and ducks.

We began letting out our ducks and chickens to freely roam and forage our property this year. Knowing she may attack them like she did as a puppy one time, we got a shock collar and tried training her not to mess with them. It seemed to work for a few months as she showed no interest in them until one day she killed 7 out of 10 chickens in one day. She ran through the invisible fence straight to their coop while we were gone. The shock collar appears to no longer work as she now just blows through it. We also had it on the highest setting. We did scold her when she came running up to the house with a dead one in mouth. Last week, she killed two Pekins and today killed one call duck.

I am at my wits end and need any help / advice. We also tried putting her on a 15ft leash close to the house while the chickens & ducks are out(she has access to food, water, and shelter), but that does no good as she still manages to get a hold of them(probably them getting too close). She won’t attack them while we’re present, but if we go in the house for a few seconds, bam, she kills. I hate scolding her and hate keeping my chickens/ ducks up, but I can’t have her eating them anymore. Please let me know if you have ANY advice!

**EDIT: Thank you all so much for the advice! **
Huskies and chickens don’t mix. I’ve had both most of my life. Huskies need physical containment. It’s too tempting for them- they cannot handle the mental stimulation. Too high of a prey drive- like greyhounds. They have the highest prey drive. It’s not their fault.
There are 3 kinds of huskies- the digging kind, the climbing kind, and the chew through anything kind. And if your unlucky enough you get the one that does all 3.
They require full containment. Cant dig out- concrete or wire- can’t chew out- heavy gauge chain link +- electric wire- and can’t climb out- think
Of a lid, roof, more chain link....
I’ve never lost a chicken . But I have had friends lose their husky to killing chickens, sheep, goats, rabbits, and cats. Build her a run. Contain her. Then exercise her regularly.
This is the only way to fix this problem. Good luck.

I have had the same problem. I ended up putting a fence between them my dogs have plenty of room and so do the girls.

In general, Dogs and poultry do not mix. My neighbor lost 8 out of her 10 hens letting her chickens run with her "nice, never hurt a hen" shepherd mix who butchered them. We have 2 Great Pyrenees who patrol around our chickens' coop and run to keep away predators, but we don't trust them to hang out with the girls. We even have a hot wire around the bottom of the run to discourage digging. Needless to say, we have NEVER lost a bird with this set up to any wild or beloved domestic carnivore.

I simply wouldn't trust a husky around any bird unless the dog is very well trained. My friend's husky had it in for my parrot. We were camping and the dog broke into our tent, pulled out the blankets covering the cage and then ripped open the cage to get to the bird.
I am very sorry for your loss but may I ask why you had a parrot camping!? I am not judging or anything, just curious because I had never heard of that before but find it very interesting! Although I am sorry you lost your bird. :hugs
