my insane mosaic project

Its so hard to tell that i have put so many more hours in. I am trying to do all the leaf first, so i can use the alcoholized ink and not get it on the brown , so each color will be done seperately. Even though i only have 3 chickens , there are some variencies in color daily. BUT, they still look white. Labor of love for sure. My bottom is starting to hurt from sitting on it!!

CHICKIE VICKI, I wish i could see your floor project.. i am not sure i understand what it is you are using as a form. How large is the form, and what pattern does it leave? Like a baby pool? or a smaller something?

Wow. I'm impressed. Okay, I got questions if you don't mind answering them.

1. Do you just remove the membrane from the inside of the shell or do they have to be washed or soaked in a special solution to keep them from turning to powder over time?

2. What do you use to glue them down with? Just regular glue or a special adhesive?

3. Can you paint your shells to make them the color you want? I saw a Martha Stewart special one time where I think she did but I can't remember what she used to paint them with.

4. Do you cover it with a varnish or polyurethane when you're done?

5. How do you keep the shells from cracking and becoming too small? Or do you want them to be tiny?

6. Should I just paint the background the color I want to show through the cracks between the shells or is there a way to "grout" it later? I would think it would be impossible to grout and keep the shells from washing off when it was wiped clean.

Just wondering all this stuff because I've always wanted to try this but I'm kind of a chicken at doing things without some guidance. Thanks!

this is my first Eggshell mosaic. I am using white glue. Others use macglue or mod podge. I wish i had known to YES paint the background the color you want to show through, i thought i would grout but have since learned better. I will be sealing with polycrylic. Many ES artists paint the shells before using them, and others simply glue down the shells and paint a pic on the already glued down shells. When you smash them down [small sections at a time] they do break into smaller peices but you want them to . Here is a great tutorial... I hope i can do the cut paste thing... here goes...http://www.mosaicandstainedglass.or...1899e53330b936b70c99d7bb2&topic=5066.msg95022 , i did it! I hope this leads you right to the tutorial... it will show you how to remove the membrane too! Good luck and post your pics if you try!

WOW you have quite the assortment of egg producers! Ducks and turkeys and chickens.. you will have plenty ES to choose from!

i forgot to add, that i am NOT painting mine. I am going to leave them natural.

Thanks for the link. That's a great tutorial. My daughter and I are going to try some wooden eggs to do an eggshell mosaic on for Easter. I thought something small would be best for starters.
