Good day, everyone!

Over 20 years ago, I rescued my first chicken. What started as a home made coop in a back bedroom grew into two beautiful sunrooms, customized nest boxes, air conditioning and heat, and an organic diet that's healthier than mine!

My heart resides with special needs birds, so my current geriatric hens have complete sets of chicken saddles, sweaters, and orthopedic devices to help them maneuver, stay warm, or regrow feathers.

My current flock of six are edging into old age. My oldest splash silkie is over ten years young and feisty as ever. My littlest frizzle is 9, spunky and in charge. All are bantams, except Mary, an aracana hen with a bad leg, who gets around just fine by hopping.

This time of year in the Midwest, when the temperatures drop and the cold winds blow, I remember how my little frizzle hen, Penny, came to me. A farm had been abandoned, leaving the animals to starve. I and other rescuers were called in to help. I found little Penny hiding in the back of the coop, eyes closed and trembling, naked, as the other hens had eaten her feathers for sustenance. The temperature was 27 degrees, and I have no idea how she had survived for as long as she had. It took six months before she lost her fear of the other chickens, and over 2 years to regrow her gorgeous red frizzle feathers back in. For the past 6 years, she has been the ruling queen of my flock, and her transformation from frightened, naked bird, to confident and majestic alpha hen, has taught me much.

If anyone has a little frazzle hen who needs a warm home, I would open my heart again.

Thank you for having me. I look forward to learning and sharing.
