I remember six that was hundreds ago . Check out Coops and plans . Click on forums and look for DIY coops for ideals . Your coop needs to be built with the weather where you live taken into account . Cold climates more square feet per chicken of indoor space . 4 ft.X 4ft is a good starting number . Enjoy your chickens . And remember twenty weeks or so they will start laying eggs .Better get busy

Rule of thumb is 4-5 sq.feet per bird inside the coop, excluding nest boxes and roosts. In the outdoor run provide 10 sq. feet per bird. A run cover can provide protection from raptors and climbing predators. If it is a solid material is also provides shade & some blocking of the elements. Welcome to Backyard chickens.
