Hello My name is Mary (MearBear), I have found many answers to many of my questions on this website and now i have become a member❗ After years of research i have decided to get my first batch of eggs, i am getting them in 2 days. I will be incubating them and hopefully hatching them. I am expecting to get get 6 eggs but i am able to get 12 i was wondering what you guys think since this is my first time incubating i don't want to end up with 12 chickens (i know the chances of that are slim). They will all be Australorps. I have a big family of 12,so the chickens wont be too much work. I own a dog,a dove, a gecko and a hedgehog Im so happy to have joined this website and I know you guys will be of great help to me.

Hello and welcome to BYC. Great to have you in the flock!

It depends how many chickens you want. I usually allow for an 80% hatch rate and then of course 50% on average will be boys. So if I am hoping for 8 hens I’ll incubate 20 eggs :thumbsup

I am pleased you delurked and hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Including your general location on your profile will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.
