My Ivy.. Latest Relapse...She's Gone

Her color has brightened up and she isn't hacking her lungs out at the moment. She is even sitting and eating yogurt and bread with olive oil out of it, so certainly the release of pressure helped for the moment.

Oh, we just had an earthquake. The birds were so freaked out. Everyone was hiding and Nugget was frozen like a statue, not even blinking!

Wow, Cyn, an earthquake there? do they happen often there? I can't believe this ongoing saga of Olivia. I wish she would pass very peacefully and quickly since there doesn't seem to be a good outcome to this situation.

This is the third earthquake we've had since we moved up here to the mtns. We are in a zone for it, though if you look at a map of hot spots.

I wish she'd go, too, Carrie. I know she will, but she and Ivy were just so super healthy before their reproductive malfunction, it is keeping them around longer than they would have been otherwise; at least, that's my theory.

Cynthia, what time did that earthquake happen? I think my animals were aware of something- I thought maybe there was a hawk or something that I couldn't see-

I didn't mean for that to sound uncaring, Cyn. I just wish it would be quick for them and not so drawn out when the outcome will be the same.

I was outside painting under a tree just now and the chickens were gathered under the patio table under the shade tree, I heard one that sounded like it had the "croup"!! I think it is my Nutmeg. She looks terrible, going through molt, too. They have a fan going in their insulated coop and lots of fresh cool water all over the yard. We try but just can't change what is going to happen.

You didn't sound uncaring, sweetie. I agree with you. Olivia wanted to go back out so we put her in with her sister and the others. She seems very weak in her left leg, maybe because of pressure on the nerves in that area.

Oh wow...

You know, I had a hen like that, too... I finally did put her down, and when I did the necropsy she must have had at least 2 cups of pee-like fluid in her abdomen.

Is it an infection? (I didn't read the whole thread...

I hope she pulls out of it...

least 2 cups of pee-like fluid in her abdomen.

That's exactly it, Tori. It's infection, yolk and who knows what all combined. It's internal laying/egg peritonitis in both Olivia and Ivy. We could probably pull that much more out of her, but I understand that even if I had a vet do a hysterectomy on her, the gunk is all throughout her abdomen and she's probably die anyway. It's just a reproductive system malfunction. It's a wonder any of them live past two years old. It's starts like an infection usually, but you don't know it's there until it's usually too late.
