My Jersey Giant rooster SAVED MY R.I.R PULLET!!!!

I didn't get to see this myself. But a few months ago a Sparrow Hawk came down to attack a hen and all the birds ran for cover. But two roosters who were at first running, turned around to face the hawk! The two of them ran at the hawk from opposite directions and kicked the hawk! He flew away quickly in fear. That put a smile on my face.

Is there a picture of our hero?

Yes - where is the picture to accompany this hero's story?!

Do most roosters have this kind of behavior? I am getting chickens in May and trying to decide if I need to keep one of the roosters or not???? If so... How do you choose which one to keep?

A rooster is supposed to keep his flock safe and happy. He finds treats for them and clucks a sweet sound. He spots a predator and cracks a loud crackle. He takes on a predator and honks a loud warning. His job is to be the protector and provider. If he doesn't do those things he's merely a cute rooster. I believe it's in their DNA to do those things and when a challenge presents itself you will see how fast they step up. And size of rooster isn't the most important, it's the attitude of "I'm the King, bow to me" that I find makes a great rooster. Oh he will also mate anyone he pleases. I

We chose the one out of four roosters that had the most tail feathers and crowed the loudest. He's been a great rooster.

I had to choose from seven rooster that I started with.....I chose the one that was great with the girls and a second one for back up..... The Alpha took on a hawk ..... The back up one ended up at a new home last week because he knocked down my daughter.....It will be interesting in a month or so because I have a broody that just hatched on the 29th of Dec and one of my chicks, his father was the second rooster and likes to challenge the other chicks already...

Wow! My RIR rooster has rounded hens back into our yard if they decide to take a field trip to the neighbors, but I can't say he's ever chases a raccoon before... I"m glad I live in a place where I can have roosters. My flock is much happier/safer with him.
