I actually thought they might be Australorps, so researched and they check all the JG blocks. So I guess they are just runts.

I bought 2 JG pullets from TSC that turned out to be roos. Mine are great, gentle roosters. Alert, excellent with hens and introduced babies BUT they certainly aren't any bigger than the rest of the chickens. At 6mos, on great feed, they are average sized at best. The brahmas I bought are a month younger and already my brahmas roo is almost 2x the size of JG. tho I adore my JGs, I share your disappointment as I intended to cross breed for size, now must build more coops and order more JGs. Grrr!

This thread is 10 years old but try looking for a breeder club to get good stock.

Give 'em time. My BJG, Siri, is a kindergarten dropout ... "rescued" from a classroom hatch, so hatchery stock. She was bigger than the rest of my birds very early, but tehy're bantams, so that wasn't a big surprise. It took her a full two years to reach what I hope is her full growth - twice the size of my New Hampshire Red hen. Siri's a MOOSE! A big, beautiful, beetle-black, super friendly one, but a moose, all the same!
