Woohoo!! 2 chicks hatched and a 3rd one trying his/her best to zip! The last egg isn't doing anything but today is just Day 21 and I'll give it a few more days.

The one that's trying to get out is the one that I had to use candle wax on to seal the egg because I dropped it so he/she survived!! YAY!!!!!!

I bought a new LG bator 3 weeks ago. I've only hatched eggs one other time in my life. I knew nothing only what temp to keep them at. No turning, no added humidity. 12 out of 16 hatched! Well, I got so eggcited about starting a batch that I have an egg due tomorrow, one due on the 17th, 2 on the 20th and one on the 23rd!. My hens are now laying 10~11 eggs a day so this new batch will all be due on the same day! Wish me luck. No pipping yet!

Day 20 and time to go to bed! I have 5 that have hatched, 8 have pipped! Tomorrow promises a hopeful hatch day. Wonder what the morning holds?

Wow! Congrats on your hatch!

I'd love to hatch chicks but

a) I'm not sure what to do with them if they're roosters. I couldn't bare killing my own chickens.

b) Can't buy incubator, and not sure if cardboard box would work.

c) can't find light bulb.

Have you named them yet?

So far, They are named ADORABLE, #1,#2,#3,#4 and #5. I guess they will name themselves some more individual names very soon. They aren't even dry yet, stumbling around on top of each other and rolling all the other eggs around. It's precious to see! I highly recommend this experiance to everyone. There are some really good threads on here about how to make your own incubator with very little expense. Put it in the search box and I know you could find a lot of folks here that have a wealth of info on that subject.

Day 22

Congratulations to everyone else that is hatching right now! This is so fun!

I actually got my days messed up, and yesterday was actually day 21, and not day 20, so most of my chicks did actually hatch on day 21, and a couple hatched on day 20. So, tomorrow is day 23, and I have 2 pips still, and one struggling chick that I helped out of the shell. He had zipped and then stayed that way for almost 36 hours. He was peeping so much, and I helped him out. Well, he is scrawny, scraggly, and the other chicks are totally pecking on him. I'm not sure what to do. I could put him back in the bator but then he's alone and just peeping really loud all the time. Any suggestions? I think if I leave him with the other chicks tonight, they may kill him during the night. I understand that these things happen, so I'm not heartbroken over this, but if there is something I can do that won't keep me up all night, to insure he has a good night, I'll do it. Any suggestions? Also, he was really dry in the shell and it stuck to him, so I'm worried that the pipped chicks are dry and stuck to their eggs too. I don't know what to do for them. There are also 9 more eggs in the bator with no action. What do you do with the leftovers that don't hatch? Do you open them? Kristy

Near Colville, so about 1 1/2 hours north of you! We get to Spokane at least once a month to do Costco, Target, Home Depot, Lowes, Staples, etc. I really like living up here! Kristy

Day 24-Hatch Update

Started with 32 eggs

Day 7 candled and culled 1 egg-it was not fertile

Day 14 candled and culled 7 eggs-not fertile, or very little development, mostly just brown looking yolk, gross, made me have dry heaves

24 eggs left in the bator till hatch time.

12 chicks hatched out beautifull on days 20 & 21, one chick with a huge zip, but no progress. I helped him out finally on day 22, and he has struggled ever since, but he is still alive, and finally fluffing up and hanging with the other 12 instead of looking like an outcast.
On day 23, two more pips making no progress, so I helped them out. This morning, one is alive, one is dead. The alive one looks just like the other one I helped out, scrawny, gangly, ugly, and hopefully he won't get pecked to death by the 12 healthy chicks. So my final count is 14 out of 24. I don't win the prize in the Newbie's Hatch Thread, but I got at least 12 cute bantie chicks and this was a really fun experience!! Kristy
