My Journey Begins--1st time Incubating--Join Me!!

Day 22 hatching update: 42 original eggs from 3 different shipments from BYCers. Candled day 11: 12 were clear,1 blood ring-total of 13 culled. So far, I have 20 chics that are doing well. 9 eggs still in bator. one of those has pipped, but no movement or sound from that one. Plan to leave these in for 2 more days before the final tally. I had to help 2 chics out due to excessive drying of membrane after zipping, but these chics are vigorious. All seem healthy and are eating and drinking well. Satisfied so far, since all of these were shipped. Will update end of day 24! This is quite an experience!!

Ok, I had 3 that dried out in the shell after pipping and zipping and I helped them all out. Two of them are still alive, but ugly, sticky looking, and the first one is finally beginning to fluff up after 2 days out of the egg. I think they'll both make it, but I wonder if I would do any helping next time. The last one I helped out that died, had only pipped and not zipped, and he was flopping all around and this morning he was dead in the bator. I'm glad it's over. Next year I really want a broody hen and not a bator! Kristy

Well, after looking at different hatcheries today and seeing most were sold out on day old chicks for MONTS, I decided to JUMP ON IN and just ordered a Havobator w/turner!! YIKES!!!

Now I have to do a lot of reading as I order my eggs so I can get this show on the road! It is a bit exciting and a bit scary, but if everyone else can manage it, I'm sure I can as well.

Just don't turn off this web site!!

Okay, I'm "all in" - wish me well!! I just ordered 24 eggs; 10 Delaware Giant and 14 "barnyard mix" - I figured this is as good a way as any to get going.

We need to figure out a way to divide our brooder so we can move the several-week-olds onto one side so there is room for whatever may pip & zip on Tuesday ... up to a couple dozen more mouths to feed!

Update

My two ugly chicks that I helped out of eggs are still alive and going on day 26. One is looking pretty normal and fluffy while the other one is still gangly, feather stuck to body, and just sort of standing around. They're both eating and drinking though, so we shall see what happens. I don't know if I'll help the chicks out of eggs again or not. These guys look like they'll make it, but I don't know if it will be worth it yet. Kristy

It just a learning curve we all have to go through..........
Just like hatching out..............
Next time make sure your humidity is up.

You learn by making mistakes..........
and you make mistakes by learning.................

24 in the bator, started on the 12th. I will wait for another week before candling. they are all browns.

The Aracanas I hatched all pipped and zipped over Easter....tooo cool.

All others ok, except the banties we bought. A couple losses

got a turkey called GIB the others ate off part of his wings, so he is all alone in a cage. We bring him out to play.
He likes beer..........and is quite friendly.
He has become a pet, hope to get them all out with the others soon, my garage smells like the county fair..........

so much poop, so little time.
