Everytime I bike or hoof it somewhere, and remember it's 3 miles to the bus stop here, I find what I call, TREASURE Arr! I've found, just off the top of my head, a ratchet-wrench (wrench with built in ratchet in the closed end) a 12" John Deere adjustable wrench, set of Vise-Grips, small pliers, numerous wheel weights, and while not collected, for curiousity's sake counted, cans'n'bottles, and I figure if I were commuting into town between the road ones and visiting a few trash cans, I could do $3 a day in recyclables, which will keep a bicycle or 50cc scooter going just fine.
There's probably a harf-arsed living to be made finding "treasure" around here, the "homebums" tell me there's $20-$50 a day in cans, but it sounds like an almost superhuman amount of work.
I got "hot and cold" on the idea of getting a metal detector, and seeing what there is to find.
This isn't even getting into the big stuff, bigger than a walker or bicyclist can carry, such as wood, all kinds of building materials, steel pipe, you-name-it to build sheds and coops and stuff with.
Treasure! Arr!
