My leukemia's back.

I read that surgeons can cut off the extra skin:sick after weight loss, and it is used for burn victims. Better results for all parties involved.

I have never been able to lose more than 17 lbs. at any time but, never got it lower - even with extra exercise. I used to often walk 70-100 miles in a week, and do it week after week. Which probably helped ruin my knees.

Also carrying a heavy backpack with canned groceries from the store- I thought would help build bone so I wouldn't get osteoporosis - wrong there too. Was on Fossamax for
11 years and then started hearing and reading about it never being tested for long term use.(beyond 5 yr.) In some cases was causing abnormal jaw bone abnormalities. I told my doctor I wanted to stop taking it. He was upset but, said okay- and if I ever wanted to go back on he would be glad to prescribe it. I have not, and taking it during that time didn't improve my bone density at all.

Had my first return visit after Radiation to my Oncologist Gyn Surgeon. He wants to see me every three months for a while...Making note of the healing progress. Apparently My healing is kind of slow to his preferences... But I am not in pain nor am I dependant on immodium... YAY.

He was happy that I had my bipap machine... and concerned that I was doing Ketogenic diet on my own. Didnt say as much but asked if I was doing it with help. I told him I had bough carefully researched books... And that the Cardeologist had recommended it.

ON a good note I have to be careful when I stand up or my britches want to fall off.... View attachment 1468833 Not quite Keto but Very mindful of my carbs.

Oh and I am off the prednazone and it took about a week for my knees to start hurting again... BUT the weight coming off has made them hurt less... My nest doctors appointment for my primary doc I am going to ask to be put on a dose for Arthritis to see if that helps. Any thing to keep from having to use Alieve... Because right now i am up with heart burn big time... Took it too late in the day.

deb

that is great news!

She will call his office this coming week, to ask about it. There is no mention of it in her paperwork, but the medications he gave her to take for 2 weeks, should actually deal with it all. He has her taking doxycycline, and flagyl (metronidazole), along with a couple other things. Her follow up visit with him is in a month, so I guess he may run tests again, and go from there. She's noticed a big improvement already. Not as much pain, no headaches, and when she sleeps she feels rested.

Excellent about the reduced pain and better sleep.... but I wish they would have spent the time to figure out exactly what was going on. :old

Deb, the mother of the guy my middle daughter was engaged to, lost so much weight, she had to have the surgery done to remove the excess skin everywhere. She dreaded the skin removal, but did it, and it turned out really good. She has kept her weight in check for years now. She had to wear the spandex type surgical body suit for quite some time, to hold everything in place after the surgery. She was on state funded medical, like medicaid, and they paid for everything but the body suits. They fought her a bit at first about the surgery, since she didn't do the lap band type procedure. Apparently the system is geared for automatic approval to remove excess skin from weight loss for the lap band, but not from actually dieting. I guess not so many people actually diet to get that much weight off. It took a bit longer for her to get the approval, but she did get it. Don't worry about losing the weight, and take off all you can. Be sure to drink lots of water, and at least 1 glass of skim milk a day, if allowed.

bruce, not sure why skim, but it works. At least 8oz. of skim milk a day. With a healthy diet plan, the goal is about 10 lbs. a month. In the first month or two, a person tends to lose a bit more than that, because it's the softer fats being lost. After the softer fats are lost, then the weight stops "falling off" so to speak, and the more solid fats make weight loss more stable. At that point, you should be losing approximately 5 lbs. one week, little to nothing the next, but during the week you don't lose, the body and skin should be adjusting, and trying to tighten up, even if you don't really notice it. The following week you should again lose about 5 lbs., then the following week the body catches up.

I totally disagree with diets that take off too much, too fast. They're not good for you. While 10 lbs. a month is a good rule-of-thumb for many people, it's not for everyone. Age, and health play a big role. It may be unwise for older people, or those with health issues to lose over 6 lbs. a month. Let your body guide you. Most people don't realize it's not just the skin that tightens up. Muscles, and organs have to reposition some, and tighten too. You'd be surprised how many muscles, and organs are displaced to accommodate the extra fatty tissue. The chest, rib cage, back, etc. have all been repositioning slowly over time. They too must be allowed to slowly over time, reposition themselves as weight is lost.

Something else to learn, is how food signals the brain. Huh? Yes, it's your brain that tells you when you're hungry, or full. Different foods signal the brain at different rates. Eating a small apple, or 1/2 of a large apple about 30 minutes before a meal will reduce your hunger, so you're not ravenous when a meal is set before you. So, it takes an apple about 30 minutes to signal the brain that it's getting nutrition. What should be taken from this is, don't rush a meal. When a person is ravenous, and sits down to eat, they tend to consume larger quantities within the first 15 - 20 minutes than they need, then they're "stuffed" about 30 minutes after they start eating. Take more time to allow your food to process, and signal the brain. Different foods have different release times. Allow for that.

Variety in a diet is critical, especially when it comes to vegetables, and fruits. The more variety, the healthier you will be. Raw fruits, and vegetables are a must. Something I see as a huge problem, is that we've allowed food growers to artificially push the growth of foods. They don't have time to absorb as many nutrients, and they don't develop the flavor they should. To combat the lack of flavor, we've introduced a lot of flavorings, and sauces. Most of these flavorings, and sauces are LOADED with extra calories. Even raw fruits are often served with a sweetened yogurt, or glaze, while raw vegetables are served with dressing. Good fruits, and vegetables should taste good on their own, without anything added.
