My leukemia's back.

No question. It is sad when someone can't do that because of medical issues. Everyone else - if you can't afford to pay for it, don't buy it. About the only things that doesn't necessarily apply to is housing ... and maybe transportation. It doesn't matter how much fancy stuff your neighbors are showing in their yard. Either they have the money to pay for it or they don't but as you noted those that don't are walking a thin line. No sympathy for people with toys and no money.

I was going to suggest you monitor the mail but then I remembered that many companies try their hardest to get people to get their statements online and people can easily hide extra cards from their spouses. I hope the revelation of his peer's drowning in debt turns on that lightbulb for him. And have the current "extra"/"secret" cards shredded RIGHT now, you don't have to have the physical card in hand to pay it off ;) It is the rare person who has credit card debt (ie not able to pay off monthly) that can retire and not cut back severely. Best to learn how to do that before there is no paycheck.

The last time my credit card was stolen it was in a restaurant. Server took the card out back. By the time we got home there was already a stop on the card, email and phone messages from the bank's security group asking that I call and verify purchases made on the card that day. The first 4 were legit, the last of those was the restaurant. Two other charges after that.
When my wife was in the middle of her drinking career.... I found out she had a few credit cards .... Maxed out....I blew a nut....

I made her get rid of them..... Paid then off right away..... We wasn't a pretty scene around the old homestead back in them days.

I sold my motorcycle around that time.
Couldn't Ride it anymore. Times were kinda tough work was slow...I stashed about 5 Grand away...... In a old cigar box. Half of it "disappeared."
She found it while trying to find my Morphine ...... Who knows what she spent it on.
Back then she had a bad "scratch off lottery" addiction too...... Yeah the good old days.
(2015)......
Amazing how bad an addiction can destroy o persons soul.... The day she begged me to take her to the doctors so she could stop was a good day.... Didn't know it was at the time as I had just picked her passed out butt up from work.... Where she had managed to drink herself to pass out by lunch time 4 days straight..... Her organs were starting to shut down. She had lost 25 pounds by then.

Wow... Sorry starting to ramble again.

Anyways... Her we are 4 going on for years later.... She way better today..... Basically she's come back around to herself again.
Amazing how bad a person can get.... And I'm not some "....... whipped" guy.
I knew if I gave up on her she would die.... ALONE.

Dreamer, you mean there are stations without card readers in their pumps in your area? It's been close to 20 years since I saw one that way (with the soul exceptions of one where they had 1 reader for all the pumps at one station, and private pumps for city/county/private company pumps visible from the street) the only exceptions is the pump for Kerosene were your expected to pre pay inside no matter what since they don't sell much of it.
The gas station pumps here don't even have a way to be shut off by the cashier.... No prepay.... No credit card at the pump..... Heck they just finally got a digital pump.
The old pump was still a pump built before they ever thought gas would go over a dollar.....
...I live in a tiny.... Tiny... Little town.
In the middle of BFE.....

Glad for your wife and you too, that she's doing so much better Phil. :hugs
Yeah those were rough times..... Some of you all remember then I'm sure..... She's way better now.
Most of the people around here knew very little of it..... My mother hadn't a clue.
I figured if the marriage went away...( Pretty much did for a while) I'd just take the blame.
My own kids (except my daughter who lived through it with me,) don't know.
After a couple slips... She's done well.
Just amazing how rotten a person's soul can get because of addiction.
90% of people would have walked away .... Maybe I should have.... But couldn't.
But her personality came back.... And she's doing very well.....(knock on wood).
