My leukemia's back.

You had me going for a minuter there. Someone on a local Yahoo chicken group believes this one, even though there are a lot of studies showing it is not true. Apparently there was an article on the internet in 1996 that said refrigerating eggs would hatch more females. The article did not quote any study or expert yet people believe it!

But Ron, I read it on the Interwebz, it must be the gospel truth

I've missed being on here! Work is cutting onto my online time for sure! We've got a friend that's gotten in over her head a bit with some animals and health issues, so we've spent the last two nights at her place and been short on sleep. I'm fostering a few dozen extra chicks until they're off the heat....one more heat lamp and the wiring on this place just might kick the bucket

.

When you brood a lot of chicks you get used to some losses, but I had two yesterday that upset me. The day before I'd let the middle littles (about 3-4 weeks, no heat during the day but still on the lamp at night) out for some ranging. One little cuckoo Marans apparently didn't make it back in the pen at night and I didn't notice. I found her huddled behind a flowerpot

. I was upset about losing that chick, and when I was leaving that pen after feeding, I didn't notice a chick that slipped out and was in the way of the door. I closed the door on it and snapped it's little neck
th.gif
. Poor thing....at least it was quick. But two perfectly good chicks through my own stupid fault---that's hard.

I do have more hatching....I'm going to try to sell some this weekend. Space is getting tight
roll.png
and I'm getting an idea who I want to keep and who can go.

Suzie, that looks like quite the undertaking!

How's everyone's chicks doing? And things on the moving and job search fronts? Everyone staying healthy?

I had labs today, Dr appointment this Friday. I'm going to see about cutting labs back to once a month, and Dr visits to every few months. I'm feeling like things are going well enough

I have some eggs in the incubator--Arkansas blue egg layers and some Marans. The Blue egg layers were damaged in shipping. The Marans seem to be doing better.

I have 17 pullets that I hatched on New Years day that have started laying eggs already. They are from Trader Joes and Whole Foods hatching eggs. They are very sweet chickens.

I am staying healthy. I have started up an exercise program that includes some jogging. That is hard for me to maintain because I have some foot drop issues left over from a crushed sciatic nerve. Oddly, it is my left knee not the right one that is giving me trouble. I started using a knee band on the knee and it seems to be helping.

Good morning!

Rachel, I'll give you an update on my moving experience (

)

DH is up in WY totally enjoying his new job and working hard.
I'm tossing and giving away tons of stuff.
Oldest DS came down from Kansas, got here last night, to help me.
House inspection is Friday, keeping fingers crossed nothing too much has to be done.
Auctioneer sold a trailer load of our stuff, waiting to hear how many pennies we get back.
I hope to be able to leave FL in about 2 weeks, dragging a trailer behind my KIA.

That pretty well sums it up!

except for a rat snake eating 2 ducks and a chick drowning mine are doing great... haven't looked yet today though...

I believe the cold shrinks the testicles of the cockerels.

Sad but true, for some folks if they see it on the internet it is fact...........even when presented with several facts to the contrary.
What a good friend you are to be adding more to your plate to help someone out, though that doesn't surprise me.
I am so sorry about your losses, while it is true that you do come to expect them, when they happen like that it is a blow - especially one on top of the other

I hope your appointment Friday brings the changes you are hoping for.
