. Making the world a safer chicken habitat, one shot at a time.

New jobs---so exciting, and yet so stressful.

Big surgeries, big cities---ick. But good comes of it, so that's good. Maybe Kenny can be there for the surgery but you'll spell him for the recovery? I know it was very hard for Honey not to be with me for my treatment.

Prayers for everyone.

Our office had a challenge today---no internet

. All our communication is electronically based, so the office staff was basically hosed for the morning. Didn't get it fixed until 11am. Our IT department stinks. On TV any semi-awake 17 year old would have had it up and running before they finished their first energy drink.

Phil, I'm on both prednisone and cyclosporine. I didn't ask why, I just swallow the pills.

I did take an extra 10 mg of prednisone today. I could feel a rattle starting in my right chest like I used to have, and short of breath and tired. The extra prednisone is probably why I pigged out on Chinese food at lunch and am still awake this late, chatting with you

Is one less raccoon baby your guess for Hbhoffman's question, Donrae? :D

Not the answer to her riddle, but we have 2 less raccoons here! Got one Thursday night and one early this morning. I haven't slept in days!!!!!! Like REAL sleep I mean. Sleeping with one eye open, setting my timer to wake up every 2 hours to make sure of no chicken attack. I learned a lot from those raccoons that ripped apart my flock 2 years ago. I am determined to make sure that is not the fate of my birds again.

There is overgrown property next door (9 acres) unkept. Raccoons have been living and breeding over there and they come to my house in hopes of a chicken dinner. :th

Racoons are very interesting but not in a chicken house! Yea! 2 threats gone. Not sure if I would prefer the males to be caught or the females. Need both to recreate but only one to wreck havoc in a coop. Good going, Outpost!
No guesses anyone? We all enjoy them.
Sorry for the challenge at work, Rachel! Maybe next time take a break and get Sugar Monkey and/or Echo!!

Me too...I felt that too so I hit it one harder also...something in the a air....I understand completely...when it comes to breathing we do what we have to not to go backward...hope it passes.....
Raccoons are evil creatures.  As are all creatures that prey on chickens instead of their natural diet.  Rats with stripey tails.

I would kill anything that threatens my ducks....but I don't find raccoon evil...funny they seem to be more of a problem in the city here.
I find wolves evil...am I bad...

When I was a kid, we had family friends that we'd go camping with. One summer they brought a baby raccoon that had been rescued when Mama got hit in the road. They were raising it on a bottle. It was the cutest little thing. Would follow along where ever we went, and if we got too far ahead, it would start crying... fast forward to one of my earlier flocks. A dozen mini leg horns. A coon got into the coop one night and started killing them. I chased it off, found it back the next day, pulling one of the 3 survivors through the fence of the run, head first. To this day, any coon I see will be a dead one if I have any method of making it so.

Nope. You're not bad for desiring wolves to not be in your space. I have the same issue with foxes, coyotes and the so called non existent Mountain Lions that have been seen face to face by one neighbor, and an other neighbor has footage of.

I don't find wild animals trying to survive to be 'evil'. They are just doing what they are programed to do. That being said, much like Phil, any animal that threatens my family or animals will be killed - as quickly and humanely as possible. I have no problem killing anything - 'hurting' anything is another story.

So speaking of evil creatures......

we bought some goats today
lol.png

I'd sworn no more goats.

Now the blackberries are taking over my pasture.

So we're back to goats. Trying Boers this time. Nubians were too noisy. Boers are supposed to be quieter. We went with a friend and each bought a doe and a buckling. Our doe is roan colored on the body, so the owner had been calling her Roany. Our buckling isn't related to her, but Honey immediately dubbed him Maca, to go with her

. I have some not-that-great pics on my phone, I'll try to get some up later.

They're awfully cute.

Evil critters.

Nice choices on the names!

We had two Nubians many years ago...one was named Cecil and because of his should-hang-straight-down-but-flipped-up-on-the-ends-instead ears, the other was Beanie. Now, I know I'm dating myself.
