My leukemia's back.

Where do you live? This is the USA and you cannot be fired for Jury Duty as far as I know.

Does this company sell a nation wide product? If so let me know and I will make sure to never purchase their stuff.

I work for a non profit organization. We help homeless people find and get into housing. Permanent supportive housing. I know what you are saying though. You shouldn't be fired for jury duty. It's illegal. But many companies do and they hide it in ways of siting job performance as the issue. Ron, I go to work everyday not knowing if I'm getting fired or not. I am gaining a lot of knowledge and at the very least, when I am done here, I will be very hireable. It's one of those things, I felt like I'd made it big! Then the bottom dropped out and now I see clearly.

Phil, glad you are breathing a bit better. Hope you continue to get better. Do they every give you breathing treatments? Those help, so do rescue inhalers.
Sorry to hear about the ducks :( My chickens got attacked a few years ago by DHs English Setter. I was mad that he got the dog in the 1st place. We have chickens! The 1st week we had her I was getting ready for work and heard a ruckus back at the coop, rushed out there seeing feathers blowing every which way. I get back there and Pepper has ripped the whole backside out of my partridge Cochin. I could see bone. There were others injured as well. The white ones looked particularly bad. For a split second, anger was so strong, but I grabbed her by the nape of the neck, only yelled "PEPPER!" I was shaking with anger though, and walked her back to the house. All of my birds recovered that time.. DH worked with her and tried to teach her the chickens are our property. She got loose months (maybe a year) later. Killed my only 2 crested cream legbar hens, 3 barred rock hens and badly injured my CCL roo. Then attacked the neighbors chickens. She was on a cable plus had a 10 or 12' chain link enclosure. Escape artist. She has since passed away. Like you said, Dogs will be dogs. Hope the ducks heal quickly.

Boss never had the meeting with me yet. I'm sure the other one told him what I said. As if it can't get more drama filled, I came home today to a jury duty paper. Suppose to serve week of Oct 3. I text HR to see what I need to do. She told me I should write a letter and try to be excused because should the trial last over a month, I will be replaced. It is written in their policy this way. I am writing a letter explaining my situation and the fact that I am my family's only source of income. Maybe they will excuse me. I served once about 5 years ago.

Phil, what happened with the X-rays?

Rachel, well, if you are blessed to have weight to lose?!? I am very blessed too! Been walking and doing at least one Zumba routine a day. I LOVE refit Zumba. One of my favorites is Good Morning (Mandisa). Google it sometime on YouTube. All the refit Zumba routines are good. A local church used to have free Zumba night. I was embarrassed at first (shy), but I got over it, toned up, learned how to dance & had fun. Then they dropped the program,

Outpost, I too am shocked about the company policy. I agree with Ron, I don't think they can use jury duty as a basis for dismissing an employee. Serving on a jury is a civic duty, it's not like you're just taking days off work for random personal business. Besides all that, I've been called up 3 times (only actually served once) and none of those trials lasted very long. The one I did serve on was a very serious case involving armed robbery & attempted murder and it only lasted 4 days. I think it would have to be a humongous deal (think O.J. Simpson-like) to have a trial last as long as a month.

My 2 cents anyway.

Outpost, you & I were typing at the same time

I understand what you're saying...there are lots of ways for someone to be let go, right or not. But having a written policy (vs. a non-written, everyone just knows policy) can't be legal. Of course, who wants to fight something like that? Or is in a position to fight something not right like that.

You just keep on doing your best...you'll be ok!

I can't imagine a trial lasting a month.

I had a boss where I felt that way once. Literally, when you got called to her office you didn't knwo if you were going to get fired or promoted. She was psycotic.

I worked for a company that would pay your wage while your were serving on jury duty. I hated that job and was so burned out, I prayed to get called for a nice long trial. Never did.

Thanks for bringing up the Zumba! I'd seen Mandisa's routine to Good Morning years ago and did it briefly. I really like that song, and I'll look that up and see if I can work it into my day. Big Boy and I were the only ones who went this morning, but that's okay. Any little bit helps.

Phil, I"m so sorry about your ducks. Darn dogs just can't be trusted, is my thinking. I used the electronic collar on the dogs with the goats and had good results. I need to set up some training sessions with the birds as well. Thankfully, the birds seem to be able to heal up from some pretty nasty wounds and be none the worse for wear. I hope that's what happens with yoru ducks.

And your lungs-----still breathing?

OP: Get a copy of that written policy in your possession. If possible, get a copy of your last evaluation. It doesn't matter who you are working for. Sure, the company is providing a valuable humanitarian service. But, wrong is wrong. Unethical is unethical. It is wrong and unethical for an employee to be punished for serving jury duty. Be sure you include in your letter (asking to be excused) the statement made by your employers about their company policy. I also believe that if you have served within the last 5 years, that they can't make you serve again. At least in the state of Maine, jury selection is done by lottery of people who hold licenses. Unfortunately, my name gets called often. I've been called 3 times. The first time, I wasn't excused even though I was still nursing a baby. The second time was within the 5 year time frame. Just recently I served again. Hubby has NEVER been called. At least in my state, they also can't force one to serve more than a month, of course a lengthy trial might result in a longer service. Luckily for me, I've never actually been called to sit on any juries. The many questions the lawyers ask often result in folks getting "thrown out of the pool". So, I show up for the first day of selection, sit through the listing of dockets, get disqualified, and am done for an other 5 years!

Phil I do hope you are on the mend. If you haven't heard about your x-ray results, time to call them. It's not unusual for things to get lost in the shuffle. so sorry about your ducks. I'm about ready to trade my pup in for a geranium.

Howdy....
First yes companies find ways of around the law sad but true.... I've seen people I trusted do shady things to others.
Hang in there outpost..... A different day comes at sunrise.... Watching a sunrise is among my favorite things. Because it's like a new beginning every day. Maybe life will bring something new tomorrow.... Don't know but maybe.
Even on a double Medrol pack my breathing is dicey..... But it's more of an congestion rattle not too tight.
Tight is real bad..... Tight is scary so I hope tomorrow will be better.
If not I still have to see the doctor on Thursday for a follow up.
And I'm hoping all my ducks recover.... Snowball the duck worst hurt is still in the back room. I made her a comfortable bed with pine shavings. She is eating and seems to get better. She is getting up on her good leg on her own and I think in time will be okay..... Maybe walk with a limp but so do I half the time. She will fit right in.
I really don't think my Dogs were trying to hurt the ducks.... They didn't bite then they were playing with them but ducks can't take that kind of play.... I just think of they were trying to kill then they would have.
Either way I learned a big lesson about unsupervised dogs and ducks.
Wired though today the ducks and dogs were out in the yard together like nothing happened... You would think the ducks would freak right out.... Anyway I just how I'm better tomorrow...... Phil

I hope you feel better soon Phil. Very soon. I went to hospital once because I couldn't breathe. Not being able to breathe is very scary. And I don't have to deal with it daily like you.

I decided to take my employer's advice.....sort of, wrote a letter explaining company policy of the over a month rule. And maybe I didn't make myself clear on my post. They will find a replacement for my job. Doesn't mean they will fire me. But I have no idea what I would be doing once I get back. I don't think legally they can fire me. I am at the point with my job that I have let go and let God figure it out. Lots easier that way. :D
