My leukemia's back.

I had fun back in the day helping this become a thing. Now, pink has pretty much taken over the month for awareness. Breast cancer. Had my yearly mamo last week. Because it is October...got to pick out a pink fingernail polish.

My son knew a boy with Spina Bifida in the classroom using crutches. When they graduated from grammar school, his friend was in a wheel chair.:( I confess I don't really know much about it and could stand to learn.

Cynthia I had my mammogram this year and do so annually.

My mother had breast cancer at 65 and wouldn't take radiation or chemo. It was estrogen dependent . It had spread to a lymph gland She only took tamoxifen. Was on it for 11 years. Came back and had spread through her body. THEN it came out that using tamoxifen for more than 5 years, actually caused enhanced recurrence of the cancer. She died at 77.

My sister had a rare form of breast cancer(they claimed) at 36,thank G-D she is 76.

My father's sister died of breast cancer at 65. Who knows how many ancestors never were tested because "it," was not a "thing" way back when.

Nancy, my Grandmother died of breast cancer. Back in the day, they just removed the breast. She was good for almost 15 years, then went downhill fast, into the bones..died 16 years after the breast was removed. Now, one of her daughter's got breast cancer..my oldest Aunt. She went through treatments about three years ago. So far so good, but she's got other health problem, in a nursing home.

My son started walking with a walker at the age of three, then to crutches, then by middle school he was in a chair. He did so much better, should have put him in a chair sooner. He was really struggling with the arm crutches for a while. Spina Bifida. Open spine. The spine did not close in all the way. It's in different area for different babies. Richard's is in the L 5 area. That's the lower back. When the baby is born, the spinal cord is exposed..open. Nerves weren't developed normally. Some weren't at all. It's according to where the opening is, as to where they are paralyzed. His was low..so hip and legs area. Some are higher, includes damage from waist down..you get the idea. He was also one of the lucky 10 percent that didn't need the shunt. The other 90 need a shunt, for spinal fluid build up in the brain. A lot of kids do well with the shunt. Smart folks around with it in. Think about it, spinal cord not normal..often times means spinal fluid not flowing normal. Shunt helps it flow right. ...There, a short class on Spina Bifida..with mylomenengicele. :)

Netflix has a series called "Dancing Queen" that features a man in Texas struggling to balance two careers -owner/instructor/choreographer of a highly competitive dance studio, and drag queen Alyssa Edwards. One of his best dancers was born with Spina Bifida. Obviously, it was quite low down, since she can not only walk, but dance. At 10 years old, she has had dozens of surgeries. During one of the interview segments, she expresses frustration that one side of her body is stronger than the other, and that some days it just doesn't want to work right . . . I wonder if she realizes just what an inspiration she is.

Diva, sorry about the family suffering from such, but at least your grandmother knew she didn't want certain treatments and the drug she was on did work to keep her alive for many years, who really knows if that helped the cancer return or not? at least she had a long good life after the initial cancer.
