My leukemia's back.

Me too! But I kinda tole a fibber. The two white eggs on the end are .... yep, store bought eggs. They were the last two in the carton purchased before my girls started laying, and the other empty carton I found on the porch is already full of eggs from the previous week. So I kinda tole a fibber. Feefer will get the store bought eggs tomorrow!
I almost had to buy store eggs this year! The girls started back up just in time

Good morning everyone. I helped my neighbor at the fair again yesterday. I'm a bit stiff, and moving slow. We did go out, and get the heights adjusted on the hotwires. Hopefully, I'll have better results tonight. I'm not sure it will currently stop the rats, but I have an idea for that too.
It sounds like it is working well so far! Rats are more of a nuisance and a feed stealer

I thought you loved her!

Depends on the day!

Blooie, there have been times, for almost all chicken owners, that they've had to buy eggs. Not a problem. We understand, and will let you slide this time.

I am most grateful for your understanding, and will no longer hide my head in shame that I’ve been buying store bought eggs for over 2 years. ;)

Oh, I know!!! I was tickled when I found that first little egg....properly left in the nest, I might proudly add!!

Thats been my secret phobia since the first chicks arrived here - finding a rat or a snake. Mice I can almost deal with!

Yep, shoulda just moved the hens over to Katie's so you could still get non store eggs ;)
I'm glad you are back in the homegrown egg business!

A few falls ago I didn't have any spring pullets and the other girls shut down as usual so I had to buy at the store. But I did get some locally raised eggs rather than the cheapest egg factory eggs. The next fall I froze enough eggs before the girls quit to have some for Xmas cookies and the occasional pancakes or waffles. I had pullets again this fall but unless there is an unexpected and serious depletion in my current flock of 23 I'm not going to have pullets laying in the fall. Need to remember to start freezing eggs early before the girls quit for the season.

I've read a couple survival type guides that suggest coating the eggs in mineral oil. As long as air doesn't enter the egg, they stay pretty good. They say they will last 6 months that way.

We've been working with the youngest, helping her pronounce words better. I had given a pack of sidewalk chalk to all the grands. A few minutes later, the youngest comes running inside, crying. She was holding out her arm, saying her sister pinked her. Of course, we thought she meant her sister pinched her. Nope. She was picking on her sister, her sister took the pink chalk, and drew a pink mark on the youngest's arm. She pinked her. We wiped it off, and told her to be nice to her sister, or she would pink her again. Off she went.

The same youngest, when she realized the chalk would color her skin, went back outside, and colored her arms, face, and legs. It was ok, if SHE colored herself, but worth crying real tears, if her sister put a little pink on her. KIDS!!!!

How did freezing them go? I tried that back when I had 23 and winter com8ngbon, but I think I overthunk it and messed up something!
Worked fine. You need to mix the yolk and white just some, don't whip them, don't incorporate any air.

First was going to use ice cube trays because I had read that worked. Well I have no idea where they got their gigantic tray but one Large egg was about twice the volume of an ice cube cup. Ended up freezing them in the silicone muffin cups. Once frozen the cup peels right off and the egg cubes are popped into a ziplock bag.

Once thawed they are good for omelettes, scrambled or for baking. Not so good for over easy :D

The problem from my point of view of storing whole eggs long term is they lose quality. Yeah still OK for the same stuff as frozen but fried in any form the whites especially get runny so not as good.
