My Little Ducklings!

I love the dark brown duckling - that breed is he/she? You are a real trooper - getting pooed on and still wearing a smile.

All my ducklings are females (or at least that's what I paid for) and the darker ones are Welsh Harlequins. They seemed to be the most skittery of the six, but I'm hoping they will calm down.

And I tried to prepare myself mentally for the inevitability of getting pooped on. It's part of having birds, right? And they are just so darn funny that how can you get mad at them? Especially since it's not like they did it on purpose. Plus someday they will lay tasty eggs! That's worth some "discomfort."

Day Four, Age 5 Days, Continued

Last night, my husband and I gave our ducklings their first bath! I think it might have been the cutest thing I've ever seen! After they were all done swimming and splashing and generally making a huge mess, we removed their paint tray (read about using a paint tray for a mini duckling pool here on BYC - thanks!!) and also gave them some fresh water in their water dish. One of the Cayugas immediately tried to swim in that too! Poor little thing, there's only about an inch of water in that dish lol.

Day Two, Continued:

The Cayuga duckling with a little bit of yellow on her chin and breast:

My husband holding a very chatty Welsh Harlequin:

I took this picture during a middle of the night during a trip to admire the ducklings the bathroom. Do you see the black line over the middle duckling's back? That would be a little black Cayuga leg streeeeeetching out in her sleep!!! I could hardly stand the cuteness!!!

Day Four, Age 5 Days

Today, I present to you a curled up Buff foot:

And a stretched out Cayuga leg:

I'm hoping to get another video up today too.
Duck webs! I love the Cayugas!

Day 6, Ducklings age 8 days old

We tried a different container for the ducklings' bath tonight, but I don't think we will use it again. While it was deeper than the paint tray, allowing for lots of head-diving and splashing, it was only big enough for two ducklings at a time and the ducklings had trouble getting out of the water even though we put a rock in there for them to use. Too slippery, maybe, and not slanted enough. The chunk of cardboard for a "step" next to the container for them to use as a step worked quite well though.
