My Little Introduction

Hello my name is Bella, a young bird enthusiest living in Ohio, USA. I actually dont have chickens, but a few years ago i made an incubator and hatched some eggs from a nearby farm, which i really enjoyed as a summer project. Incubating with a homemade incubator (not even a great one at that) is super challenging, and often frusterating, but ultimately very rewarding, probably even more so than hatching from a storebought incubator. Like i said, i dont own chickens myself, i live in a subdivision with an HOA :(, so once my chicks hatch i give them to some friend who is wanting to add to their flock.

Overall, hatching chickens is such a wonderful experience. its always fun to come on here and see what others have eperienced and how we can learn from that, especially in the egg incubation aspect of things. Im currently incubating a batch of silkie eggs so ive been on here more than usual so i thought i would make an acount just because. :):)
Oh, I welcome you! I am new to raising chicks and am very interested in learning how to hatch them as well. I’m still working part time (sometimes full time) so I can’t devote the time I’d like to the craft, however I expect to in the future. Any pointers you can provide will be helpful to anyone interested in learning I’m sure!

Sorry that you don't have any chickens yourself, but hatching chicks must still be a pleasure, right? Did you know, that on Lockdown, you can chirp to the eggs and the chicks inside will chirp back? (Sometimes it takes a couple of times to get them to reply. ;) )
Yes! We actually have done that the last couple hatches. Here, ill post the video of our first egg hatching, it was such a fun moment. . One minute... Let me get the video :D

Well I'm no expert. My DIY incubator is basically a 16 x 12 x10 foam box, with a small window (made out of a picture frame glass) and I light bulb socket connected to a dial ( which helps to get the right temp). Other than that I run three thermometers, as well as a hydrometer and have to watch it day and night (literally haha). So far I've had a 50-75% hatch rate with it by following the 100 F + 30-40% humidity then 99 F + 65%-80% humidity during the last three days of incubation. I hand turn the eggs three times a day too. something I would want in the future would be a temperature controller.

Its a lot of work, not to brag or anything, but I enjoy it so much and like I said its so rewarding. If you have any questions just let me know!
