my bank is always trying to tell how safe it is to bank online- no thanks, when my account gets flagged I will either be missing my card or it will be there fault.
maybe you should help your gp to get a virus protector, not sure if that would help and teach them some method of changing their password each month. I had a co worker that had to change hers at work every 2 months, she used grandchildrens names usually in the month they were born but your gp could use something simple, backwards spelling of that month, or something simple but it changes.

we have told them over and over but they are old, don't understand, and are set in their ways

lol maybe one day they will get it

Even if you do not do your banking online all of your info is still online. Hackers can still get to the info. You just have a false sense of security. (I don't mean 'you' as in 'you, yourself' but 'you' as in a plural sense of the work, in general.)

I love my online banking. Your info is out there no matter what, be it online or in the bank's database.

Plus...I'm a state or two away from my actual bank and there are no branches nearby. Online banking makes it alot easier to get money, check account balance, etc.

also because of the online banking sight, my husband was able to notice the purchases right away, instead of having to wait for our statement, and then who knows how much money you could lose!

We had a similar experience a number of years back, where my mothers card was stolen from her when she was buying me some shoes. We ended up, losing R25 000 in value of just clothes that this person was shopping for. We learnt our lesson good but I'l never buy from that certain shop ever again.

Well, you don't have to lose your card or have someone steal it to have this happen.

DH checked his balance over the phone this spring and he jumped up and said he would be back in a little while. I didn't know what was going on. When he came home, he said "Well, I know why I am so overdrawn at the bank...I over-extended when I was in California!!!
He has never been in California, and he still had his card in his wallet! He doesn't do anything online, either.

He did use his debit/credit card at a gas pump to pay for fuel, and someone in CA, got his info and used his number at an ATM machine to get cash. They did a balance check first and then used the number several times to empty the account!
Try to explain that to the ones he wrote checks out to, I know they didn't believe him, and then he had charges to pay to them because of returned checks.

He had a hard time convincing the bank that he did not make these purchases, since he was still using the card to buy fuel. It took a long time to get the money back and he had to jump through hoops to get it. There were over $300.00 in overdraft charges besides the amount of money missing. He still had to pay the fees from the stores where he wrote those checks, the bank didn't cover that.

It is sad that thieves have such an easy time stealing from all of us now. I wouldn't even begin to know how to do something like that. I always thought you had to have the card in order to use an ATM machine.

We always tried to be very careful, but it happened anyway. I prefer cash!

I checked a credit card I rarely use and found a charge.....for a hearing aid! Go figure. That would be easy one to track at least........I don't have a hearing aid.....LOL.

its more likely that numbers get stolen out of the mail or while you are at point of purchase locations. I have banked online, used paypal, etc far more securely than writing a personal check, mailing a personal check or some order where you write down your account and routing number in catalog order, etc. Same with credit card information. That is much more likely to happen to any of you as long as you are internet savvy and dont unintentionally give your account information away.

I was never notified by my bank that they froze my MC debit card after someone tried to charge 25 cents. It was what was known as a "feeler" charge. They caught it and froze the use of my card. Luckily i wasnt out any money and was so thankful i didnt make them fill out countless account papers in order to reimburse me for the 25 cent fraud charge. They had enough to deal with just investigating it.

The fact is, there are devices someone can use just standing near the checkout at walmart or outside the door that can retrieve the financial information that can be reused to make purchases ( which btw are harder to prove than withdrawals)

If you were using your debit card, how in the world did they get your pin number?

No one could access in our debit card (if I lost it while shopping) without the pin number.

always check the account daily or every two days to make sure everything is legit. Confer with spouse to see if he or she spent something online or went shopping after work.

If it gets run as a credit card, there's no issue of a pin number being needed. Now, as to how they are withdrawing from an ATM, they can watch you type in your PIN number if you type it in at the register.
