It is more expensive at chewy. But, also thinly shaved and well loved by my pampered and spoiled picky ducks. They scoop up huge mouthfuls of the stuff after every few bites of food. I can also get the grey kind at my local feed/hardware store for less. My ducks don't love it as much, but they eat it!

The kind they rejected looked like little white rocks.
I went ahead and ordered a 10 lb bag of it to try. I will put it only in the duck pen, even though the chickens eat in there until they’re run out by the ducks.

Hopefully the chickens will still like what I’ve been giving them even after they taste the new OS. If I can tell the ducks take to the new OS, I can splurge and get it only for them.

But, I am very happy to say that Peaches has laid a hard shelled egg for the past 3 days! :yesss:

Woohoo! Go Peaches!

I put a few mealworms on top of my oyster shells for several days to get my ducks eating from that bowl. You know how they hate new things. Then they just started scarfing the stuff. They eat a little more than 1 cup per duck a week!! I don't know what's normal, but it seems like a lot to me. I hope your ducks like it, too!

That's the stuff my ducks gobble down with pleasure!
They just don't know anything else. Very likely would they punish me with their "You want to poison us?!" looks if i server them something else. I have to be careful when mixing too much crushed egg-shells in...
I'm very familiar with that look. 🤣

Based on the amount my chickens eat, 1 cup/duck does seem like a lot. It takes my chickens several months to go through a 50# bag of OS, even during the laying season. And my silly rooster even eats some if he’s in the run when I put more out! I guess he’s got a case of FOMO (fear of missing out) when it comes to anything to eat. 😂

Why in the world would my “non-aggressive” rooster do this to poor RalphieDux? As aggravating as RalphieDux can be, seeing this made me feel bad for him. At least he was trying to mate his own kind for once.

I was cutting limbs on a tree and noticed RalphieDux fixing to do, well, you know, so I decided to video him, never ever dreaming the lurker in the back was planning an attack. Good gosh. I would have intervened had I seen it go south. But WTH? I mean to tell you that RalphieDux got the heck out of Dodge with his corkscrew trying to keep up with him!

ETA: I have no idea why this video doesn’t show like my others do. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Poor RalphieDux!

I have never seen Dooley (the roo) be mean to anything. He runs from the top rooster, but come to think of it, I’ve never seen him run from RalphieDux when Ralphie runs the chickens out of the duck house. All the chickens are afraid of RalphieDux except my Speckled Sussex hen. She flogged the ducks early on and they haven’t forgotten it. He doesn’t mess with her. But still my heart breaks for the poor little rasper!

I’m gonna have to pay more attention to Dooley’s interaction with the ducks.
