"My mommy says your chickens have fleas..."

this is someone elses child and you have to respec the way they want to raise their child

To a point...yes. But this is someone else who is raising their kid by lying to them. I have no problem with giving facts to kids.

That is why I said explain things to her

ok, ya'll explain the difference between chicken lice or mites and the lice that kids get from school. That is one of the things that's been holding me back from getting chickens (even tho' I REALLY REALLY want to) because I don't want to be holding a chicken and get lice.

Is it comparable to dogs getting fleas? how do you prevent it? My "plan" (we all know how plans go) is to build the coop this fall, complete the run and get the babies in the spring. In theory, I'd like them to free range all day and be cooped at night.

Head lice live on humans only, they need human blood to survive. You can go to headlice.org and check some facts. I keep a very large pot with sand and DE mixed together that they dust themselves in. It should help keep bugs off the chickens. So far so good.

Avian lice and mites are species specific. Meaning if your chicken gets lice, and one gets on you, it may bite once but will then leave. They can not survive with human blood.
If that is all that is holding you back from getting a few chickens... for goodness sake get some chickens!! BTW chickens eat a lot of the bugs around your house, so when you get chickens you will probably see LESS bugs around.

I forgot to add that this little girl is at our house several times a week as my sister-in-law watches her kids and mine, at my house. So yes, "mom" is at my house often and sees the conditions my chickens live in.

I really think that a lot of it has to do with that the little girl LOVES my chickens and her mom is jealous of the fact they can't have any. Sounds weird, I know, but when they were chicks and she was lovin' all over them, she said "My mommy said that chickens aren't cute when they get older, so I won't want any" First off...uh yes chickens are always cute and that's when I let her name one as hers. Its like she trying to make sure the little girl hates my chickens

As stated before, her mom isn't playing with a full-deck and its sad to see that her kids are going to suffer the consequences of her irrational behavior. Anywho, thanks for letting me rant
