one of my 4 chickens has passed away a few days ago with seemingly no cause. they are all very lethargic and sad, but my plymouth rock has a purple tipped comb. is this normal for a grieving chicken, or is she going into heart failure? to add on to this, she has been drinking a lot of water compared to the other chickens.

Where are you located?

How old was the chicken that passed? You state it had no symptoms, a necropsy could have been done to discover the cause. Lethargic and purple tip comb could be weather related, is it hot? Cold? What other symptoms are they exhibiting? Are they're still eating/drinking/pooping/laying?

i am in iowa. the chicken that passed was a year and a half. it has been getting chilly the past couple days also. she layed an egg yesterday, but she didn’t today. i haven’t seen her eat since monday and i haven’t seen her poop either.

The chilly weather maybe the cause for the "blue" tips on her comb ... How is it currently? It could be the start of frost bite ... Is it "that" cold? Do they have a warm, draft free coop for nights? IF it's really chilly you could put some coconut oil or Vaseline on the combs to keep the "heat" in.

Not eating/drinking/pooping is not good. Is she the only one or are others also displaying the issues? How old is she? It's possible she's "grieving", try scrambling up some eggs or canned tuna or moisten dry cat food ... something that's enticing her to eat. Even if it's mealworms.

Hope she's doing better :hugs
