My name is Cindi, and I'm a chickenaholic. :)

Hi Cindi this is Robin. I feel like I know you better now that I know your name : ) I hang my head in shame as I weep and confess, I AM A CHICKENHOLIC! Wooooo is me. My dear sweet other half was so excited at first when we got our first 10 chicks. Now he ask me every now and then, " How many chickens do we have now?" I can tell by the tone in his voice that he is not as ecstatic as I am. We only went from 10 to 31 in three months. I so wish he understood better. I only want 50 more! : )

I have a problem too, lol. We started off with planning on 3 barred rocks....one for each of our kids. Then I decided we needed 5, one for each of us (but the real reason is simply that I wanted more!). Our five barred rock pullets are 7 weeks old now, and yesterday we picked up 3 four day old Silkie chicks. A few weeks ago I had a lady put three EE in her incubator for me.....hatching May 30 or 31....so now we are at 11. We shall see where we go from there! There are so many breeds I want!

LOL...you sound like me...I started out ordering 6 fertilized eggs then I read about how shipped eggs most likely won't all hatch. So, using that premise...I ordered 24 more eggs. They sent 4 extra with the first order of 6 so I had 11 plus 24. Well...I only got three chicks out of those eggs...half weren't even fertilized. So to sooth my broken heart we went to a local place and got 8 true Ameraucana chicks (2 blue, 3 black & 1 splash) and two Olive Eggers! Oh...and surprise...because I bought 8 chicks they gave me two 3 week old Light Brahma's!! I wanted some Easter Eggers and two more Olive Eggers so I went back and got hatching eggs (gotta put that incubator I bought to good use...right??)...Are you keeping up with the chicken math so far??? There will be a quiz at the end! LOL! Of course any chickenholic has to get an even dozen eggs...right?? So while I was there picking out my 2 olive eggs and 4 Easter egger eggs I saw a beautiful big fat hen strut by...I was like WHAT IS SHE???? She was so friendly and sweet! Turns out she is a French Blue Copper Maran! So...I got six of her eggs!! Even dozen...yay!!! So...how many chickens do I currently have and how many will I have if all of my eggs hatch? BTW...at day 7 they were all developing...yay!!!

They got to have a twelve step program for this somewhere. Im early in addition. Started last year with just four, added four more this year. Have incubator that holds twenty four, have roosters, have electricity, have hens....I can be my own supplier! Genius, pure genius.I was given a free egg too. That's how they get you, the first ones free.:)

hi Cindy......I'm a chicoholic too. A year ago I told my hubby I ONLY wanted 5 chickens so it sounded no big deal to his ears, I knew that number was a lie as there were so many different breeds I wanted, good thing he built that coup to hold 15 cks. In 2 yrs I have 3 coops and 33 cks, a duck house w 4 Peking ducks (3 females n 1 male for mating, lol). Right now I have one broody Bo sitting on 10 eggs. The chicken world is full of breeds I would like to try.

He told me that he didn't have to worry bought me buying shoes, purses and jewelery but cringed when I went to the feed store in the spring.
Guess it isn't a bad addiction since we do eat them and thier eggs as well as sell enough to pay for thier food. Plus they free range and keep the snake and bug levels down.

Have a good one!

Y'all are seriously de-free-ranged and it's cracking me up. :lau It's egg-xactly what I'd egg-spect from such a clutch of scrambled yolks. How fried do you have to be to lay it on so thick, chick? I myself am NOT turning into a chickoholic! I'm only getting 25 pullet chicks now to account for missexed Roos, losses, and to have egg-stras to sell later. :fl I hatched that idea myself. No yolk!

I gave up cigs 3 yrs ago and not ready to kick my fowl habit just yet. Heck, I'm just getting started!

Hey all,
I have a story about moving or not moving a broody from the flock.
About two weeks ago, one bo went broody and was sitting on 7 eggs in the main coop. I left her there for 5 days letting her get into a good Grove.
On the 6th day at 6pm, moved her into a single brooder box and pen. She paced to get out until it was dusk then I saw her sitting where I placed her eggs.
Next am, I looked and she had moved all the eggs out of the nest and spent the next day and half off the eggs.
I thought the eggs were dead so I disposed them and let her back with her flock. (Sad here cause I did break them open to see and all were embryos)
She went straight to the empty nest box she started at. I gave her a new clutch of eggs for a total of 10.
She had been brooding for 3_4 days.
I gathered the rest of the eggs from the coop, one of those was laying out from her box ( which has a good 3 inch lip).
Next morning I broke one of the eggs to cook and the egg had a lot of blood in it, it almost turned my stomach.
So........Tonite, I did an egg check on her and 2 of the eggs are gone.
I believe the bloody egg was one from her clutch.
Either she took it out or another hen got it when she was stretching her legs.
Either way I am a little concerned having this happen again, one for myself but I sell eggs.
The eggs are dark brown welsummer eggs and I am not good judge of candeling them.
So, my story is for those wondering to move a broody or not.
Even with this event I did leave her where she is at as I want more chicks, next time I won't keep eggs I find near her clutch.

Thoughts?
