My neighbor won’t stop complaining

I have six hens, under the county limit. When they lay, they sing egg songs. Sometimes I can dissuade them with a little shouting or feed, but normally that’s what they do.

My neighbor is on me constantly to shut them up. She, I swear truth, videoed a recording of them claiming they were louder than a jet plane flying into the nearby airport. I asked her if she’d appreciate me videoing her dinner parties for sound. She denies she has any.

Anyway. The rule in our county is that ppl can make noise until 10 pm. Everyone puts up with others leaf blowes, construction noise, adolescent musical tries and so forth because there’s not a choice about it. And as my birds are legal, same situation.

She keeps insisting on more talking about it, and I think I am done, but she is just the biggest Karen ever.

Should I just ignore her from now on?
Have you offered her eggs and introduced her to the birds? Just a thought. The tasty gorgeous eggs may quiet her a bit. If that doesn't work just tell her that you chatted with the rest of the neighbors and they all agree that her constant complaining is more annoying than a few singing chickens.

Yes.
She is stressing you out. Ignore her, it'll add years to your life. Good fences make good neighbors. If you can afford it, put a solid fence between your yards.

We have repeatedly offered her eggs. She says she can just get them from Whole Foods.

I just had to laugh.

I realize that the stress she's causing you is no laughing matter, but it's clear that she simply has no sense of perspective and is simply an unhappy person who is determined to make others just as unhappy as she is.

Get as much video of her harassing you and make sure to show that you are well within the local ordinance. Take evidence to local police office and file a complaint and request a restraining order or a no trespass order. If you can afford if get a good surveillance camera and recorder.

I’m in California. The chickens live in the backyard. One day four years ago, two got out of the gate and wandered to her front yard. I went and got them before she ever knew.

She didn’t start complaining until the last year. Before that she was busy running her small business, now defunct, and dealing with the care situation of her father, now passed. Shes now home 247 and apparently feels entitled to silence 247.

She is getting obsessive. Like she really said that she wants me to be videoed by her yelling at my chickens because she thinks that alone is making them shut up. No, actually, it’s my going out there and also shaking a rake in their direction, or feeding the, or whatever to induce temporary distraction.
it sounds like she's had a lot of change and upset in her life the last two years. she might be depressed, and that could lead her to being focussed on tiny things that annoy her- where before wen she was busy she would not care. I say just try and be kind but firm and ignore her.

You’re really allowed to have roosters in the Gold Country? I had to give up mop the foster rooster With his first crow.
I have roosters and live in Sacramento County. I live in a suburb on a cul de sac and it takes 15 mins to get to downtown! My neighbors have actually told me they enjoy my roosters (I have 13). I think it’s rather sad that people treat chickens like they’re so much worse than dogs that bark all day or people having loud parties. I can understand if it’s crowing at 3 am…but most of the time they’re pretty quiet!

I’m sorry your neighbor is having issues with your ladies. I wonder how much is related to her own stressors from the sick family member you mentioned and such. A lot of times people that are super stressed find ways to funnel the need to control something like the neighbors chickens that have never been an issue until now, since they can’t control their current stressors. I know my children sure make so much noise that annoys me to no end…but even more on super stressful days. 🤪
