My Neighbors Little Dog Is A Threat?!

I am so sorry to hear about your chicken, obviously she was much loved but can I please ask that you reconsider killing this dog for what it has done, yes it was on your property but how did it get there in the first place, it just did what most dogs will do given half the chance. Have you even made the owners aware of what their dog has done, I realize you are angry but before you just end his life with bow and arrow, a gun or your bare hands please look into the alternatives, talk to the owners, ring the animal control or even the police, yes the dog should stay in its own yard but unless controlled properly then no dog will stay in its own back yard if given the chance to go for a wander.

Last night at 12am I was getting angry at my little corgi who wouldn't shut up. Turns out he heard our LGD barking outside, and she was going ballistic. There was a stray beagle in our yard again

I was NOT happy. The owners were called and warned. They didn't even apologize! It really riles me up.

No one was hurt. Thanks to Clementine for letting us know something was not right. She is only 6 months old, and I am very proud of my little girl! (or big girl).

You betcha it is a threat. They can actually be some of the worst. A friend has had packs of Jack Russell terriers kill bird after bird by digging under the pens. Her father shot one that was half in and half out of a pen the last time with the owner yelling, "You can't shoot my dog!".

Check out your laws about dogs off the owner's property and print it out for the neighbor with a warning to keep that dog at home. Me, I'd add "or lose it".

There will be people who tell you that you are at fault for free ranging your birds on your own property, but that is your right. YOU are not in the wrong; the dog owner is. I got chickens specifically to free range them, though they do have pens that they are in when I am not at home. See my signature line.

Your bird was where she should have been if she was on your property. The dog was a trespasser and a predator, off of its owner's property, simple as that.

100% agree!

I thank you for all of the support. me and my folks have discussed these comments, and we have decided that the next time that Gus*the dog* comes onto our turf, we are going to kill him. I don't want to take the time to put that mutt in the pound, I'll just end his life then and there, either with a bow and arrow, with a gun, or with my bare hands, I will avenge one of my best laying hens, and all of you are right, that dog should stay on it's own yard, but it was my stupidity to not watch them, and if I had been out there, she would still be with me today.... it makes me go

Thank You all so much!

Did you let the neighbor know that Gus is a killer?
Make sure you are legal in your actions. I would warn the owner that you are in your rights (if those are your rights, every were is different) to use lethal force to protect your livestock, pets and family.
There is nothing worse than conflict with neighbors. (except conflict with family)

Good luck
Patricia

This is very well said. I would definitely warn your neighbours. If they don't know, they won't do anything to stop it.

Personally, I don't think it would be right to kill the dog without talking to the neighbors first. Let them know what happened, give them a chance to correct the situation. If they don't, take the dog to a shelter, or contact animal control.
It isn't the dogs fault, and it shouldn't be killed when there is a better alternative.

So sorry about your hen, she didn't deserve to be killed either, while she was just being a chicken.

Yup!! I read some of the comments here. One said you need to go talk to your neighbor first BLA BLA . I think a lot of people give predators one of their chickens life before they do something about it . That's not how its done here at 7L. I ain't loosing my chickens not even one. Why !! My chickens are on my property I carry a gun everywhere I go & its not there for looks. I got enough predators trying to eat my eggs, kill my chickens. Dang hawks are thick as thieves this year & snakes my god if you people think there's a shortage of snakes in this world your mistaken. I killed two just last week. I found one yesterday that I'd over looked who had got his head stuck up in the rafters & died guess I never looked up. He was hanging there I finally smelled it. Trust me there's no shortage of hawks either. I don't know who writes the laws but he hasn't been outside in a while. Just for clarification the snakes I killed were in my chickens nest boxes with a fake egg in his belly & if you think I'm gonna go in the coop & catch that egg eating snake it ain't gonna happen. I got my fake egg back though.

There is an issue discussing a problem dog with the owner. When you are forced to SSS, you are at the top of the list of suspects. I discussed it, and now we are the Hatfield's and McCoys. Once you are known that you will kill a dog, you will be blamed for any neighbor's dog that disappears if you did it or not.

Yep i learned the hard way years ago. SSS

I've found it a bit of the opposite. When someone isn't warned what might happen to their dog, they just shrug, buy another, and the same thing happens. However, a caring owner, once warned, will keep their dogs at home. The ones who don't, well, there are just too many people around here that shoot dogs that they have no one to blame.
Of course, I have someone with a shiny badge on his chest go warn them that their dog is about to take a dirt nap.

I've also learned that, should I have to shoot the dog, I can also file damages against them for having to clean up the freaking mess.
