Got these girls yesterday from some friends. I'm sure Big Bertha and Angel are Brahma's:

And, this is Bette the bantam. She and Sparky didn't get along well, so she's separated, in the adjoining "nursery coop". When they get more used to each other, we'll put her in with the others:

They've been fed nothing but scratch for some time now, so they're a bit on the thin side. Other than that, they're wonderful, healthy girls. We put them right in with the rest at first. Bertha and Angel did great, no scuffles at all. Bette, on the other hand.........is a bit cranky. (She's been broody for a while now.)

Any idea on Bette's breeding? I though Black Japanese Bantam, but I'm not sure.

Thanks, csguinn. I'm very happy with them.

SpeckledHen, if you're out there, do you have an opinion on any of these girls?

You have two lovely Light Brahma girls. I have one myself. The little lady you're holding is one I just cant ID. I don't have any bantams myself, sorry. I like my girls LARGE, like your Brahmas. Cute little thing, though. She looks like someone that might be named "Gertrude" from that look on her face, LOL.

Oh, Thank You, SO much, Cynthia!! I knew you would agree that Big Bertha and Angel were Light Brahma's. (okay, I didn't "know", but I sure hoped!!)

As for Black Bette (originally named for Bette Davis, but the 13 yo DS dubbed her Black Bette after a song).......I thought at first she was a Black Japanese Bantam, but I'm not convinced. Feathersite doesn't have any pics of a black one, so.... the search is still on!

Edited to clarify: Feathersite has a pic of a black roo, but not a hen.

I have seen pics of Chicks just like your Bette and my Elizabeth. Trying to remember where. I think it was a hatchery but cant remember which one. Not ideal or mcmurray. I will keep looking.

I fouund what I was looking for.
Look up Cackle Hatcheries and look at old English game bantams. I think my Elizabeth is this. maybe your Bette is too.

I was thinking the same thing, that Bette looks vaguely familiar. She does look something like some black Dutch bantam hens I saw on Feathersite. Look at Dutch Bantams in the breeds section and down the page are a couple of those. There's also a pic of a dark grey Old English Game Bantam hen that looks a bit like her.

Thanks!! She does strongly resemble the Dutch Game Bantams, but her ears are not white. I'm leaning more towards Old English Game Bantam now (you got me thinking and looking). Only thing there is that her legs are black. Oiy......I love a good challenge!!

Edited to add:
Cackle Hatcheries has a great pic of an OEGB hen. With exception of the beautiful red wattles and comb in the pic, it looks just like Bette, right down to the black legs. I think we have a winner!!

I can't thank you both enough for holding my hand and helping me out here! I even think I found my mama hen, Marilyn tonight, too. Looks like she's a Silver Duckwing OEGB.

Ahhhhh........that was fun!!

The Black old English game bantam in the Cackle Hatchery pic does have Black legs. Does Bettes Tail look like this. It is really a long tail for a hen.

I wonder if she could be a Black Australorp Bantam? I have a hen that looks just like her and would love to know what she is. Australorp Bantam, and I've heard they come in Bantam even though Feathersite doesn't show it, is all I can come up with. I have oegb, and yes they come in black, but my little hen is bigger than they are and has a chunkier build. She looks exactly like an Australorp except much smaller. It's hard to tell from the pic if your hen is chunky.
