My New Back Yard

Layout 7.jpg

My wife and I should be closing on our new house next week. We are moving from Houston to Rhome, TX where we are buying a double wide on an acre. I am not brand new to raising chickens but I am certainly a novice. I have been lurking on these forums for quite a while and even raised six RIR chicks in a yard that was really too small for them.

Now, I come to you asking what would you do with my new back yard? I plan to raise enough chickens to be able to have an endless supply of eggs for about 5 people and sell eggs, hatching eggs, and chicks to supplement the costs of raising the chickens. I have no grand illusions of actually making money with this. I would want an absolute max capacity of 20 adult chickens- 12 ideally.

Things I am looking for opinions on:
Coop and run- How big? Where?
Septic system- I have never had one. Are gardens okay? How close or far away do they need to be?
I want to build a cinder block bbq pit. Where would you put it.
If this were your property what else would you do with the yard?

The best thing to do is to read articles in the learning center and then ask questing in the forums.

Thanks for your detailed reply! I like where you are going with this. I am going to check with the neighbors regarding chickens as this is close to there house.

That is a nice thing to do. Make sure you checked with your local planning commission to see if you have to do anything special to own chickens. I had to apply and get approved no Roos here and it dictated my structure. Check before you build. A half dozen free eggs to the neighbor is a nice good neighborly thing to do. They will love ya!

While I am allowed poultry, including roosters, my county has ordinances regarding housing them and their waste at least 50' from the property lines. Be sure to check on all such issues before sinking your shovel! ;)
And enjoy your new home! How exciting!

50 feet wow my structure had to only be 20 ft. from any property line. I got lucky. My waste makes great free garden compost.

Love it! Looking great! Did you fly planes? Love the shade trees you will need those in Texas. I have been to Denver, Austin, and a few other places. Had a blast. Love to go back sometime. Kayaked the Colorado river through Texas. Make sure you read the forums and articles for building coops, care and maintenance, and raising chickens etc. Helps to see what others have done. So excited for you! Congrats!

I am good at 12'. All rules and regs have been checked. I cant have a commercial operation that would require a tax ID nor can I have large livestock. Goats are a maybe but Im not going there...yet.

Yep commercial outlawed here too. They do not want unregulated backyard farmers or rural farmers selling to the population to avoid spread of disease or problems.
