My NEW Breeding Pens

I just got done busting some up this afternoon. Got some nice ruff sawn 4x4's, 2x4's all hardwood.Glad you enjoyed the video. I'm going to build a shed with the stuff I'm collecting right now. Just finished a brooder for the chicks I hatched. I have to do a coop soon also.

We added the divider walls under the coops, put up the gutters on the back, added some more roosts poles. Fixed the outside wall, we forgot to add the chicken wire and it was really unlevel ground so fixed that too. Then in that valley the sun started going behind a hill and it got too cold.... going to be 25 tonight here. Then it was time to button up all the birds for the cold night.

Anybody with ideas on locks? PLEASE?!?!?!

I would just about be sure that you are well past the need for ideas on locks....but hasp and loop (thingy) and then just use a carbine on a piece of wire/chain. You cannot lock yourself inside. animals could not get it open. I love carbines. Course this cost money and I realize that you are doing this as little cash as possible - as I am going to do with mine. But I thought I would post this idea for anyone else....I will continue reading and I am sure you got tons of great ideas. I was just offered a HUGE pile of snowmobile/ATV pallets - the kinds that are used for shipping the machines on. So I started to research and found your thread....THANK YOU SO MUCH. I think I can do something with these pallets and make a very nice coop for my birds. I want to put out as less money as possible. I am going to start hitting yard sales in the spring for wire, windows, spare lumber, etc.

Well, these are my cheap locks. I have them on about 6 doors and have never had a problem. Quick and easy to install!

Yep, I did make a post regarding using a carbine thingy and hasp and loopy thing...but this is basically the same idea. I knew there would be wonderful ideas sent to you.

Since I am "bugging" you again: why the lumbar wrapped in the black plastic? Is this a way to prevent the wood from rotting?

Rot and termites. It is not pressure treated and is underground mostly.

I have to get on those locks..... VERY inconvenient to take a screw gun to check eggs, and might loss some eggs one of these days if the gun slips.

I kinda' thought so. hooks and a carbine. Would work great. they just clip open and you can clip them shut very easy. Tie them to the side of the coop with a piece of wire, baling twine, or light wt chain and they drop out of the way but are not lost while you finish chores. I use them, work great. Thank you for all the wonderful information.

Wow! I am impressed! You have given me so many ideas! My local lumber store says they will give me all the pallets I want so I am going to be getting busy very soon. :)

Im so glad I found this. You have done a great job I love it and im very impressed. I recently have been collecting lots of pallets and havent built yet im still brain storming before diving in. But you have given me lots of ideas. We are going to be building a firewood house, small bantam coop, small goat house, and maybe a dog house all out of pallets. I should probably get cracking huh?
